Claire Davis unveils empowering new single, “Long Gone”
Toronto retro-soul artist Claire Davis has unveiled her new single “Long Gone” via LRK Records.
Drawing from her influences of the likes of Etta James and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, the unrelenting rhythm and sassy background vocals of this track complement the “take-no-mess” message of Davis’ lyrics and vocal delivery. A song about knowing your worth and walking away from those who don’t!
Davis explains:
“My songwriting in the past year has been reflective of how I’ve been releasing things that are no longer serving me. Through the process of grief, I feel that the pandemic has shown me how important and limited our time is, and if we are in situations where we are not being valued, we need to walk away.”
Review
Coming in at 2 minutes and 43 seconds, “Long Gone” packs a soulful punch in a short time. Claire’s vocals possess intensity and strength while remaining somewhat mellow.
Claire’s singing voice on the track is the shining star. Her vocal range seems infinite, and once you add in the backing vocals and music, a track that’s nothing short of perfection is born.
Lyrics throughout the track evoke confidence and empowerment, in addition to being completely relatable.
The chorus, “If you wanna leave me, You better get your bags packed, Lord knows I don’t need you, So don’t come running back babe, I’ll make it crystal clear, You think I’ll be standing here, You’re dead wrong, I’ll be long gone,” is a no-nonsense ode to the end of a relationship. When asked about the writing process behind the track, she shares, “I really wanted this track to reflect the “take-no-mess” attitude that I think we should all have when it comes to protecting our worth and loving ourselves.”
For the first track that I’ve heard from Claire, I can easily say that I’m ready for more!
