Mary Clements shares her video for “Bonne Nuit” with Canadian Beats in advance of its release
Bilingual, Hamilton-based, indie-pop singer-songwriter Mary Clements has a charming new single, “Bonne Nuit,” coming out on Friday, October 7, from her upcoming debut full-length album, out later this Fall. “Bonne Nuit” will be available on all platforms, and the accompanying video will be on YouTube.
We’ve teamed up with her to unveil the video EARLY for our lovely readers.
Sung half in French and half in English, “Bonne Nuit” is a lullaby that sings us to dreamland as we begin to process the fears and challenges of the day. Set in the form of a waltz, with a sing-song melody, “Bonne Nuit” features a unique and striking combination of indie-pop guitars, traditional-sounding mandolin and accordion, beautifully layered backing vocals, and a surprising but effective wah-wah electric guitar solo.
“I wrote ‘Bonne Nuit’ about the time when we’re just about to go to sleep,” says Clements. “My nighttime self is reflective and sometimes judgmental of whatever my daytime self might have got up to that day so I wrote this song as a way to help encourage self-acceptance, so that I could rest easier and gentler to face another day… This is one of my favourite songs on the album because I love the French lyrics, and I find it to be very universal and soothing.”
In keeping with Clements’ DIY approach, she filmed, edited, and produced the music video for “Bonne Nuit” by herself. It features her singing over a green screen with different dreamy backgrounds appearing and a skateboard on fire. Clements is pictured wishing viewers a good night.
“When someone takes time to listen to my music, I don’t take it for granted,” says Clements. “They’ve now shared an intimate moment with me, which creates a connection. To me, there’s nothing more special and powerful in life than feeling connected and together.”
