American rock band Jimmy Eat World made their Canadian return last week when they played their first live show in Toronto in many years during their “Something Loud” Tour. The concert took place at History on September 29th, which was a Thursday and also the eve of the Truth and Reconciliation holiday, which meant most people had the next day off.
The concert was originally supposed to feature the pop/punk band Charly Bliss, but unfortunately, they had to cancel a few dates on tour, including the Toronto show, for unspecified reasons; the band did say they planned on making these dates at some point in the future.
Local Toronto indie band Pony was asked to fill in on very short notice. It was a great choice to slot in Pony as they definitely have a similar musical style compared to Charly Bliss, and Pony has also been one of the most consistent indie bands in Toronto over the last few years. Pony lead singer Sam Bielanski is also known for her talent as a voice actress as she plays one of the characters on the animated children’s show “My Little Pony.”
Jimmy Eat World, who are originally from Mesa, Arizona, rocked the house in at History, playing all of their hits during this post-covid music showcase in Toronto. This band brought their multi-decade catalog of music up north and gave the Jimmy Eat World fans what they have been missing, which featured a full 21-song set with one encore. Some notable songs during the performance were classics like “Blister,” “Sweetness,” and new songs like 2019’s “Congratulations.”
Jimmy Eat World finished off the set list with probably their most famous song being “The Middle” and came back out for one encore, which was “23”. I was humorously curious as to why the band didn’t just add an additional song to their set list to make the encore song “23” the actual 23rd track in the setlist.
The group formed way back in 1993 and released their first record in ’94, so it’s safe to say that some of the fans at the show might not have been born yet or were very young back then. This 90’s band has certainly passed the test of the time, which is rare for bands coming out of this decade, but Jimmy Eat World is one of those rare acts.
