Zach’s Picks of the Week – May 30, 2022 to June 4, 2022

Zach Cooper is back with his Picks of the Week from Canadian Beats!

Welcome everyone back to get the scoop on some new music on “Zach’s Picks Of The Week.” The sun is shining, and it’s about time to start getting in shape for the summer.  I have scoured all of the latest articles we featured this last week on the website, and I have chosen my favourite five for your enjoyment. You don’t have to take my word for it; you can pick your favourites from our Canadian music website, Canadian Beats Media. Our authors, who work very hard to get these articles out, would appreciate it. But you’ll be able to check out my choices of the week, at least a small clip of them in the video posted just below. I highly recommend you check out all of these artists on their social platforms and in the links to the articles below. Now it’s time we get into the music, so let’s get going!

Get ready to rumble because we are getting into my picks right now!

Number Five

I’ll be introducing folk-pop singer-songwriter Justine Giles, from Sudbury, ON, now based in Calgary. She has released an animated lyric video for her award-winning single, “Save Myself.” This new single is a statement of strength and emotion and chronicles her journey and mission as a singer and songwriter to develop her sound. It was recorded at Evergreen Sound in Calgary and was produced and mastered by award-winning Mark Troyer. “Save Myself” was co-written by Giles and Calgary roots-rock troubadour Matt Blais.

Number Four

Next up will be Jaywood, the moniker of Winnipeg musician & songwriter Jeremy Haywood-Smith. Who’s presented a new single/video for the track, “Thank You,” coming from his upcoming album, Slingshot, and expected to be released on July 15 via Royal Mountain Records & Captured Tracks.

The close to last single off the album was co-produced with Jacob Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and features string arrangements done by Johann Lenox. The video for this single, which Chantel Simpson directed, showed Haywood-Smith handing out flowers on the streets of Harlem. It’s a feel-good video, so be sure to go and check it out in the article posted on the website this week.

Number Three

Number three is coming up next, and we’ll be checking in with James Favron from Hamilton, Ontario. Favron unveiled his heartfelt alt-pop/ folk single, “Lovers,” to all streaming sites. He states that “Lovers” was written after the final chapter of his marriage. “We spent the better part of a year living together after the split, And that involved both of us starting to see other people.”

The video for “Lovers” features Favron engaged in his daily routine at home mixed with his performance of the song. The video’s storyline closely mimics the song’s arc, with the climax of the clip arriving when the singer-songwriter begins packing his things to start a new life, finally breaking free from the ghost of his past.

Be sure to head over to the article and see the full video for “Lovers” by James Favron here.

Number Two

In the top two this week, we have a singer-songwriter hailing from London, UK, and Vancouver, BC. We have Mauvey, who has unveiled his latest single/video for “The King” on all streaming platforms. It’s an uplifting, vibrant track with empowering prose about equality, respect, and the inherent value within us all.

The new video for “The King,” produced by Mauvey and co-directed by himself and Andrew Huculiak, sees actress Breeanne Brereton star as The King, while Mauvey takes the stage as The Martian. Head over to the website and see the brand new video, co-directed by Mauvey for his latest single, “The King.”

Number One

The last recommendation of the week is going to our Five Questions With Katy Hurt. She has recently unveiled her second Canadian single, “Wish I Could Give You Up,” on all streaming platforms. This single comes after her previous release, “Sounds Good In A Bar.” However, in this latest up-tempo single, she writes an open letter to her greatest love and vice, music. Unveiling relatable lyrics that all listeners can take something and apply to themselves.

It seems like Katy will be performing at this year’s Canadian Music Week in Toronto, and she will be announcing more performances around Ontario very soon.

Be sure to check out the full interview at Canadian Beats here.

I hope you enjoy these recommendations and found something new music for the week. The website is always full of new Canadian music emerging every day.
