With the release of Karli June’s debut EP Where You Come From, she has gone ahead and given his fans something to smile about. It’s six tracks that include the singles “Heart Drunk,” “Home Team” and “The List” and are the tracks that have started to put June on the map over the past year and a half. You can read more about this in my Canadian Beats article on this EP.

Now, on to the interview I had with Karli June, via email. This was a great opportunity for me, through Canadian Beats, to chat with June about her debut album. Check out our questions and her answers. You will enjoy what you read.

Hi Karli. Let’s chat about your album … Where You Come From

Now that your debut EP Where You Come From is out for the world to hear, how does it feel for you?

It feels so exciting. This album is truly, authentically little pieces and stories of who I am. It feels great to be able to share that with the world.

Tell us a bit about your album and how it came to be? Where did your inspiration come from, to be able to put all of that into words and music?

This album is a little bit of each part of who I am. It’s my stories and challenges of life that have taught me valuable lessons. It’s where I am from, and the places and people who have helped me grow.

What did you discover about yourself during this creative process?

Because every song is a part of who I am, it really made me reflect on what’s most important to me in life. The people and the places who shape us – and the person that they build us to be.

What was the very first tune and the very last tune that you wrote for Where You Come From and what were you feeling as you put pen to paper, so to speak, knowing that they would be a part of the compilation of telling a part of your life story?

The first song was “Big For A Small Town” and I wrote that song on my own prior to working with my producer, Karen Kosowski. I wanted to write more music about where I am from and share that with the world. The last song we wrote was “Church to Pray” and that was inspired by churches being closed during the pandemic.

Is there any one song on Where You Come From that you feel your fans can relate to the most?

I would say “Home Team.” Everyone has someone in their life that has helped them in the hard times and been there in the good times. It’s a universal message for everyone whether you’re from a big city or a small town.
