Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

hi, I’m lemin. 🙂 I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer. I turn my sad into songs. I’ve been writing music since I was 8, breaking hearts (including my own) since I was 12, and pursuing music ever since. when I was 17 I moved to Toronto from London, Ontario, and was eventually accepted to the remix project where I really started getting serious about music. since then, I’ve been writing in some incredible studios across Toronto, New York, and Los Angeles. but at the end of the day, I write and produce my own best music at home in my bedroom.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

It’s always been hard to put a label on my music. people have called it r&b, soul, electronic, synth-pop, alt-pop, singer-songwriter, the list goes on. truthfully I used to think a lot more about HOW I wanted my music to sound, WHO would be listening, and what would be popular. but now, I honestly just let whatever comes out, come out. as a result, I really feel like I’ve created something new and interesting because its wholly me, and no one else is me but me 🙂
If there’s one thing that’s constant throughout my music it’s that it’s emotional. I feel things deeply, I always have. I let that guide my music for the most part. I write because I need to, and I only write when I can’t not. the music I’m writing now comes out of me as if it was meant to. for me, it’s so important that my music be honest, raw, and meaningful to me at the very least.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

unfortunately, due to the state of the globe right now I’m pretty sure all shows everywhere are cancelled 🙁 it’s unfortunate because I really really really love performing, and I put everything I have into it. every so often these days I perform a lil set on Instagram live so you can stay updated there!
I usually perform with my guy, Adrian Hogan (aka @slwjmz) who’s a killer on the keys. I sing, play the piano, and my baby, my vocoder. whether or not you’ve heard my music, I’m pretty certain I can turn you into a believer if you come out to one of my shows because I really try to make you feel what I’m feeling when I sing.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

My newest single “when i met you ft. Sean Leon” (@seanleon)! this is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written and I’m so happy to have finally put it out. really proud of the vocal production I did on the first half of the song. I recorded and manipulated layers on layers of vocal harmonies from my bedroom. be sure to listen all the way through because when jack rochon’s (@jackrochon) beat drops and Sean Leon tells his story, you. will. vibe.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

I’m a HUGE Daniel Caesar and Charlotte Day Wilson fan. I really love their chords and melodies – both of their entire catalogues are flawless. Jessie Reyez, of course, I have to mention. she was in the round of the remix project just before me! she is an incredibly talented performer and songwriter. I had the honour of working with one of my favourite Toronto artists on this latest single, the amazing Sean Leon. so grateful to him for gracing my track with his flow!
