Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey guys, Ben and Doug here. First off we’d like to thank you for having us on Canadian Beats! We’re a producer/DJ duo based out of Toronto, Ontario. We’ve been making music together as Highcard for the past year and a half, but prior to this have individually been creating since high school. We both got into producing when we were around 15 and fell in love with the ability to express our life journey through music.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
We both are highly driven by the energy of live music and use that as a reference when sitting down to write a record. With every track we want the listener to get a taste of that same feeling. I (Ben) coming from a vocal background, am very inspired by melody, chord progression, and mood of a track. While Doug also shares these same ideals he has always lived with a “Go hard or go home” mentality and it shows through our sound design especially in our drops.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Currently, we are residents at a local lounge and spin twice a week. However with 2020 just around the corner and loads of new music we are excited for what’s to come in the new year. Similar to our writing style we take our audience on a journey with our live set. This includes earth-shattering drops, heart-melting vocals and a connection that brings everyone together in a way that takes you out of your everyday thoughts and struggles.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
We are gonna have to say “Without You”. Not only because it is our freshest release but due to the fact that it connects with us on an emotional level. This song is about heartbreak and the effects that love has on your day to day, which can relate to almost anyone.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Its very inspiring watching fellow Canadian artists grow and succeed in the electronic dance scene. Some of our favourites have to be deadmau5, Felix Cartal, Lights, and more recently DLMT. We also have always loved supporting underground acts and are looking forward to all new Canadian music coming in the new year.
