Five Questions With Chris Clute

We caught up with Chris Clute, he has just released a brand new single, “Listen 2 U“.

Chris shares,

Listen 2 U was written after a tense falling out with a former band member. After re-connecting and making peace, this song was born to remind ourselves why it’s important to put aside our petty dramas and make an effort to stay in touch with old friends and family.”

Check the single out below and find out more about Clute via our Five Questions With segment.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, my name is Chris Clute and like a lot of people, I’m still trying to figure myself out. I’ve been playing in a band for 4 years and also been doing this project with my friends Sal and Pete from Sound of Kalima. I feel like I’m just scratching the surface on who I am as an artist and where I who I want to be as a person.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

It varies from song to song but typically the majority of the writing for this project happens in the Sound of Kalima (SOK) home studio. For the latest song “Listen 2 U”, we were initially intending to write a pop song for my sister Andrea. The instrumental grew and developed into this big stadium rock sounding bed frame. The instrumental evoked a sense of optimism and resilience. For me, when writing music, something needs to pull me in right away. Something has to make me feel.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I’ve been performing with my band Marine Drive for 3 years and have yet to perform any of the songs for this project. My goal when performing is to try to bring people in. Bring down the walls and try to make people feel how I’m feeling. My favourite shows are those where I feel like the singer is speaking directly to each person in the crowd.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

We just released our first single of the upcoming “Homesick Holiday” album. If they looking for a Chris Clute track on streaming services I would suggest “Listen 2 U”. Ideally, I would send them a sneak peek of a new song off of my upcoming album “Homesick Holiday”. I’m very excited about these songs and can’t wait for people to hear.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Arkells have been my favourite band and a huge inspiration for me for a while now. I even got to share the stage with them in Vancouver at a free show at the Commodore Ballroom. Dream come true and huge moment for myself and my friends who were there.
