Canadian artist and producer, Mvnu has recently unveiled his 4-track EP, inverted A, which follows his highly-praised 2020 studio album, bye, cloud.
Late last month he released a single from his EP, “fairytale”, an ethereal anti-pop anthem that shows off his signature sound.
Bringing back more of that distinctly diverse direction he is known for, that looks to merge the worlds of hip-hop, alt-pop and so much more, ‘fairytale’ makes for a wonderfully intriguing listen. With his bold and captivating voice riding a breezy bed of sweeping tones and pulsing beats, his latest offering is a warm and heartfelt return to form throughout.
Speaking about the new release, he said,
“fairytale is all about the feeling of reaching a certain age and it not being what you expected. More specifically, being in your 20s feeling like every day is boring, repetitive and overall the same thing with nothing exciting happening. While when you were younger you expected your 20s to be an amazing experience full of friends and good times. This has created both a feeling of nostalgia (Wanting to go back to teen years since they were more fun) as well as a feeling of sadness/ disappointment with the life that is being lived at the moment. The music video compiles various fun moments with friends depicting the “fairytale” that I wish my everyday life was like (As well as a sense of nostalgia and tribute to my friends that live in a different country).”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi there! My name is Mvnu (pronounced manu), I am a Canadian singer, songwriter, and producer. I make all my music from my bedroom and try to embody a mix of genres borrowing from hip-hop, alternative, lo-fi, and more.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
inverted A is a 4 track EP where I tried to show what my music is all about. Although the four tracks have quite different vibes to them, they still have a characteristic “mvnu” sound. I made this project as a sample for anyone that is listening to me for the first time and wants to know what to expect from me as an artist; an introduction of sorts to my style. When it comes to the writing, the songs on this project embody the major sentiments I felt throughout 2021.
When it comes to the global pandemic, how are you keeping yourself out in the public eye while not being able to perform?
Social media is the best way to do this in my opinion. There are tons of communities out there for specific genres of music, for me it has been mostly on Discord. If you are able to find a community with similar interests and music tastes to what you make, it can be extremely engaging and help gain some real fans, collaborators, and genuine friendships.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so if you were able to work with ONE fellow Canadian artist, alive or dead, who would you choose?
One of my all time favorite artists is Drake. Although our sounds are extremely different, he is one of the most versatile artists out there and I’m sure he would find a way to make our song sound incredible. I’d also be very interested in seeing what approach he would take on one of my beats, whether it’s an R&B route or straight rapping.
What’s your goal for 2022?
I’d say my goal is to be as consistent with dropping music as possible. Working on my mixing skills so I can truly finish songs and put them out into the world. Along with this comes building a fanbase (no matter the size) that is engaged and interested in my stories and sounds.
