Five Questions With Easy Tiger

Easy Tiger, made up of Gabrielle La Rue and Sarah Dion has unveiled their new single, “Ibiza”. The single is pulled from their debut six-song EP, Breakfast In Bed on May 6, 2022.

With the upcoming EP, Gabrielle La Rue wanted to tell the story of her last 365 days, from a rough breakup to a new apartment with her dog, all interspersed with road trips – like the evolution of her state of mind, almost scene by scene. Sarah Dion joined her to shape up the acoustic demos, recording as much in sticky basements as in luxurious cottages, relying on the DIY ethos because she had no money and because she simply had to do it. An EP like a self-examination, a discounted therapy: to leave behind the outdated in order to make room for what really matters – and to dance.

The first release, “Ibiza” goes in the same direction, opposing habits of low standards and self-destructive propensities to an appetite for the dance floor. A rock anthem as it should be, with power-pop flavour, surging guitar, and wide voice, in which the rhymes between “pizza” and “Ibiza” are placed appropriately.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey hi, Gabe and Sarah here! So we pretty much got bored during the pandemic and started easy tiger. We used to play in a different band together a couple years ago, stayed friends since and decided to start writing again when there was nothing else left to do.

Gabe showed up at my shitty rehearsal space and we started shaping her acoustic ideas into fully arranged songs. We realized we were having a ton of fun doing it and we’re actually pretty good at it too. So we got 6 songs ready, learned to engineer, record, and produce ourselves, got a band name, and here we are!

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

“Ibiza” wasn’t supposed to be on the EP. We had 5 perfectly good mixed and mastered songs but Gabe arrived with this melody and 2 chord riff that we just couldn’t ignore. So we got back to my sketchy basement jam space, wrote and arranged the whole demo in one afternoon while getting tipsy of course.
At the end of the session, I remember hitting the spacebar and both of us screaming during the whole song out of excitement. I think we knew from this very moment that we had to add Ibiza to the EP.

When it comes to the global pandemic, how are you keeping yourself out in the public eye while not being able to perform?

As touring and freelance musicians, it’s been kind of impossible to keep up with the downsides of the pandemic for so long…! It’s hard to only rely on social media to keep the ball rolling when really, all people want is to scream along to a song out loud in the pit.

I think Easy Tiger has been a therapy for Gabe and I in a way that we were doing something for us with no one expecting anything out of it. I guess it was the opposite of ‘’staying in the public eye’’ but more about doing something that really mattered to us.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so if you were able to work with ONE fellow Canadian artist, alive or dead, who would you choose?

Boy Golden 100%. Fellow Canadian musician from Winnipeg. We’ve been obsessed with his latest album ‘’Church of better daze’’. I’m just gonna say it and throw it in the universe, but we’ve been fantasizing about him producing the next easy tiger, so who knows!

What’s your goal for 2022?

I guess our goal for 2022 would be for our songs to resonate with as many people as possible. This project is very new to us, we have no idea how it’s gonna translate but we’re proud of it and can’t wait to play it on stage over and over again.
