Five Questions With 4 Minutes Later

Alien-pop band, 4 Minutes Later has released their new single, “In My Head”. The single is paired with an electric music video that plays with the concept of listening to the monsters in your mind and, eventually, becoming them.

“We all have negative thoughts about ourselves, that maybe we aren’t good enough, but don’t let those monsters consume you,” the band says on “In My Head”. “The song is about not letting your own negative thoughts be the loudest in your head. Keep going, keep chasing your dreams, keep being you!”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

We are the formally anonymous – 4 Minutes Later .. or 4ML for short. We are a pop-duo and write “Alien-Pop” which is really our way of saying we will write to whatever genre we are feeling.. Some tracks may be more rock-based while others have a more synth-electronic base. We just write music that we like or feel passionate about. Personally, we stand for peace and love. We cannot wait to take the stage again as performing is truly what we love most – putting on a kick-ass show for the fans – we owe them everything! Only 4ML fans (Laters) could take an anonymous group and make them trend on Twitter before they even released music. We put our heart and soul into our music and leave it all on the stage every chance we get!

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

We have been fortunate enough to collaborate with talented artists, producers, and writers. We try to surround ourselves and learn from some of the best out there and that helps us grow as musicians, songwriters, and as artists. We really try to create music we enjoy listening to and look to current artists at the top of the charts for inspiration. With COVID, we have learned to be efficient at virtual writing sessions through video calls. Technology sure makes that easier.

How have you been keeping creative during the Pandemic?

It can definitely be difficult and we find inspiration can sometimes come in waves! We try to do as many skype/zoom writing sessions as possible and – when safe to – get in the studio, which we’ve been fortunate enough to do a few times during the pandemic. We managed to film a music video for In My Head during all this as well. There is always something we feel we can work on and improve. We try to work on some aspect every day – even if it is something small – and push ourselves/each other to be better. Now that we broke anonymity the content floodgates are open and we cannot wait to share everything we have coming.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Our brand new single “In My Head”! We feel like we are releasing our best music yet and have more songs coming out this year so if you like it make sure you follow us! We both have different personal favourites but In My Head is a great snapshot of where we are currently. We tried to really explore new sounds, which resulted in what we consider our greatest complete piece of work from top to bottom, out of our releases thus far.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

There are so many great Canadian artists right now it’s hard to narrow it down. Of course, we love the big names like Shawn Mendes and the Biebs but we also love Jamie Fine, LaurElle, Nuela Charles, Shawnee Kish, Monowhales to name a few!. Our taste varies over many genres so we like a wide variety of music from heavy like Alexisonfire to pop like Marianas Trench and everything in between. The music we like spans decades from oldies April Wine and Glass Tiger, all the way to new stuff like Jessia (can’t get enough of her music). Honourable mention – growing up in the same hometown as Neil Peart – RUSH – Alex Lifeson must be one of the most underrated rock guitarists of all time!
