Barrie, ON-based rock band, The Mystics are back with a brand new single, “Black Widow”. The single follows the success of last year’s debut album, Burning Down, and the 2020 summer single, “American Man“.
Filled with sinister riffs, pointed lyrics, and rich sonic tapestry, the new single represents the weight of a genre they’re straining to get off their backs.
“Black Widow isn’t just someone or something, it’s your darkest fantasies and temptations playing out in real-time and the consequences of those choices. But there comes a time where you have to leave it all behind and move forward.”
This latest single is what The Mystics leave behind for fans as they continue venturing into new sonic spaces.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
We are The Mystics, a Barrie based Canadian rock band. We’ve been releasing music for the past 2 years.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I think like most bands, our writing style is constantly evolving. In the very beginning we were exploring a lot of funk rhythms and riffs, eventually honing in on a more classic old school metal and psychedelic rock sound. I think now we are moving in a more modern rock direction, incorporating some folk, prog, and pop elements into our songwriting and production.
How have you been keeping creative during the pandemic?
One of the challenges during the pandemic has obviously been staying safe. I think right from the beginning we realized we needed to shift the focus from live shows to experimenting with recording and songwriting. We kind of figured since we can’t tour, we might as well take the time to explore some new directions and send ideas back and forth online until we could get together to record. It’s definitely been a fun creative process, and somehow we’ve managed to make the most of the small windows where it was all right to gather to create music.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
It would definitely be Black Widow, which is our newest song, however, we’ve always been in the mindset of if you like this, just wait for what we’ve got coming next!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?
I mean it’s hard not to go with some of the classics like Neil Young, The Guess Who, or Tragically Hip, but we also really love bands like Death From Above 1979, July Talk, Arcade Fire or even bands like Nap Eyes, Japandroids or Dead Levee.
