Toronto, ON-based indie-pop artist, OLEYADA has teamed up with us at Canadian Beats to unveil her first solo release, “Pick Up the Phone”. The track is a breakup song for your worst best-friend. It is a fun indie-pop song you can dance to, with a bit of a dark side, and the lyric video features “facetime” videoes from her and one of her real-life best friends.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello! I’m Oleyada, I’m an indie-pop artist making music from my bedroom in Toronto, Ontario.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I’m definitely a confessional songwriter. I’ve been writing since I was about 13, and it’s always been a very private and personal process, I would only email my finished ideas to my best friend for a very long time. I’ve come out of my shell a bit more since meeting my boyfriend, Mathew Fantini, and now we frequently collaborate. He sends me beats he’s working on, I send back vocal and lyric ideas, and we work it out. He produced “Pick Up the Phone”, and other upcoming singles.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you describe your live performance?
Due to COVID-19, I currently have no upcoming shows. I would have made a surprise appearance at Wapiti Festival with the Free Label for their single “Up in Flames”, which I feature on. It would’ve been my first live performance as Oleyada. Once I’m able to play live, my shows will be bright, fun, and emotional! I want everyone to have a good time, but also to get a little bit in their feelings.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
As of right now, “Pick Up the Phone”. It’s the most me I’ve ever sounded. I’m not picky when it comes to genre, but there’s a special place in my heart for pop music. I also love a petty break-up song, and friend break-ups are the most intense breakups in my experience.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite bands/artists?
I really love The Weeknd’s new album, I had a mini dance party in my room to “Save Your Tears” on my birthday. I’ve also been jamming to a lot of Carly Rae Jepsen and Lennon Stella at the moment, female pop singer/songwriters are the majority of what I listen to.
