Avery Dakin – “Comin’ Up (Live)” (Single Review)

Halifax songwriter Avery Dakin shares tender new single, “Comin’ Up (Live)”

Halifax songwriter Avery Dakin has unveiled her single, “Comin’ Up (Live).”

“This song was recorded the same way it was written: just me and a piano, singing from the heart about taking that brave first step of admitting you’re afraid to feel,” said Dakin (she/her). “Its simplicity, the repetitive chord progression, and its grasping, singular melody, all speak to a life that feels stalled. The question ‘What’s comin’ up when I’m not around?’ resonates with anyone who has felt suffocated by their emotional self, and has learned to bury that self to survive. ‘Comin’ Up’ wonders if there’s something beyond that boundary that can be healing, even empowering.”

Recorded live off the floor to reflect its tenderness and sensitivity, “Comin’ Up (Live)” was captured with care by NoMethod and recorded, mixed, and mastered by Reuben Gilbert.

“The song was recorded on a chilly January afternoon in the very same room that used to host my childhood piano exams,” Dakin said. “I sit at the familiar grand piano, reflecting on the path that has brought me here – hiding, seeking, nervously planting seeds that might one day hope to bloom. The simplicity of my vocal performance and the stripped back, expansive piano accompaniment expose the vulnerability I felt writing this song, knowing I was finally strong enough to feel old wounds, and to let them pass.”

Review

In “Coming Up (Live),” Avery adeptly balances vulnerability and resilience, inviting listeners to delve into the complexities of their own emotions.

The repetition of the refrain, “What’s comin’ up right now, it’s comin’ up right now,” serves as a haunting reminder of the relentless tide of emotions that threaten to engulf the protagonist at every turn.

The evocative imagery woven throughout the song paints a vivid picture of the protagonist’s journey toward self-discovery. Lines like “This well is deeper than I ever wanted to know, I’ve gotta wade through it alone” evoke a sense of profound introspection and the daunting task of confronting one’s innermost fears and insecurities.

Overall, “Comin’ Up (Live)” is a captivating exploration of the human experience, offering a poignant reflection on the universal themes of loneliness, forgiveness, and self-acceptance.
