Care to introduce yourselves?
My name is Robbi Niles and I am originally from Barbados, now living permanently in Toronto, Ontario. I’ve been playing instruments and making music for as long as I can remember. I believe it was around three years old when I began playing the Tenor Steel Pan which led to many other instruments and eventually finding my voice. Music has been my passion and main driving force since my early teens. I like to take care of myself and tend to go to the gym 5-6 times per week. The grind never stops. I also enjoy gaming and spending time with friends and family.
Tell us about the process of writing and recording “Fiji?”
‘Fiji’ is the third and final song of a trilogy of songs. ‘Venezuela’, followed by ‘Havana’, and now, the final chapter, ‘Fiji’. The mood for Havana and Venezuela was light which was, in fact, outside of my comfort zone. However, when it came to Fiji, I knew I wanted to explore a darker and moodier production style – which feels like home to me. The heavy synth bass, 808s, guitar solo, and haunting pads which feature prominently within the music tie perfectly with the lyrical content. Inspired by a wild night out with my friends, who took me out to get over a breakup and the answering machine messages heard in the intro and outro perfectly encapsulates this life experience in 2 minutes and thirty seconds.
I am an island boy, born and bred. This makes writing about tropical love a magnet for me. Relationships fascinate me and provide the fuel for my music. My co-writer on this trilogy was Rizzy Vito, an interesting character and wicked songwriter. He thrives off my beats and collaborates with me in the development of the song. Although relationships are my passion, I’m not lucky in love. This comes out in the trilogy. Love and loss are constant companions and in the midst of it all, the beat and hook lines came to me.
What’s it like being a musician in Toronto?
I lived in Toronto for 6 years before 2020. I was supposed to move here full-time mid 2020, however, plans changed and things were delayed. I’m excited to say I am officially full-time in Toronto. I love this city and what it stands for. A city of culture, diversity, and most important, music. I want my music to grow in Toronto and Canada alike and I am so happy to call it home. Collaboration is the key to success and already I know this city has a lot to offer. Working with producers like Derek Brin is inspiring and helps drive my creative process. If you are a writer, producer, or artist, hit me up. I’m around.
Who was the first and most recent Canadian artist to blow you away?
The first Canadian artist to blow me away was Three Days Grace (with Adam Gontier as the original singer). The most recent artist would be Daniel Caesar. Both epic. Both are very different. The beauty of music.
You’ve been making music for a bit of time now, what’s one piece of advice you can offer to those starting out?
One day at a time. Never give up. Surround yourself with good people. Well, that’s three pieces. But it’s simple.
