Great Lake Swimmers Recently Released First Album In Five Years, Uncertain Country
Great Lake Swimmers have shared their newest album, Uncertain Country via Harbour Songs / Fontana. This new album marks the band’s first release in nearly five years and compliments the group’s two-decades-deep musical catalogue.
Kicking off with the title track, “Uncertain Country,” this lively and intricate song explores the depths of human emotions, the passage of time, and the search for meaning. The evocative imagery and repeated phrases add to the introspective and thought-provoking essence of the song. The chorus’s repetition of “uncertain country” underscores the feeling of confusion and being lost in unfamiliar emotional and metaphorical landscapes.
The previous single, “When The Storm Has Passed” has done great on streaming platforms, with over 155,000 streams on Spotify. The lyrics of the track convey a longing for a simpler life. The line “Things are changing, maybe for good, I would hold on if I could, take a break, one or two, fuel yourself with something true” caught my attention, encouraging the listener to take a moment to reflect on what really matters.
“I Tried To Reach You” begins with a beautiful piano intro, joined by smooth, harmonic vocals, weaving together vivid imagery and a heartfelt plea for connection, leaving a lasting impact on the listener. The repeated phrase “I tried to reach you” expresses a heartfelt desire to connect and understand, conveying a deep yearning for closeness.
“Swimming Like Flying” possesses a whimsical beat that catches the listener’s attention immediately. The combination of playful lyrics and a catchy melody creates an engaging and thought-provoking song. It encourages reflection on the connections between swimming, flying, and falling, evoking a sense of wonder and curiosity throughout.
Next up is “Moonlight, Stay Above,” a hymn-like song that exudes a sense of tranquility and introspection. The lyrics capture a yearning for solace and protection from negativity while exploring themes of self-reflection and the search for deep connections. The repetition of the chorus, “shadows, get behind, darkness, stay away, and leave me, leave me alone, moonlight stay above, that might find a way, don’t strand me, and leave me, alone,” reinforces the plea for protection and solitude.
“Riverine” delivers a powerful message through metaphors and poetic imagery. Through the symbol of a river, the song explores the theme of perpetual change and transformation, emphasizing the river’s ability to move forward without the option of turning back. The song as a whole invites the listener to embrace and marvel at the incredible beauty and strength of nature.
Track nine, “Quiet Before The Storm” continues on the theme of nature. The lyrics explore the interaction between the singer and the surroundings, emphasizing the reciprocity between the two. The calm, yet powerful instrumentation on the track adds to the element of mystery put forth with the chorus, “quiet before the storm, the quiet before the storm, I turn a thought toward the void, the quiet before the storm.“
“Promise Of Spring” immediately captures the essence of renewal and growth, embodying the arrival of spring and its transformative power, through both the lyrics and instrumentation. The imagery and symbolic references evoke a feeling of hope and vitality, leaving the listener with a renewed sense of energy and optimism.
“Respect For All Living Things” adds an intriguing element to the album. The song focuses on the theme of respecting all living creatures and celebrates the diverse and majestic qualities of different animal groups. The lyrics convey a broader message of appreciating and honoring every living being for who they are.
“Flight Paths” delivers a powerful message with the repeating line “I was with you then, I am with you now.” The track carries anthemic energy, driven by a captivating beat that resonates with listeners. The reassurance of unwavering presence throughout the song adds depth and creates a strong emotional impact. It’s a compelling piece that leaves a lasting impression, inviting repeated listens to fully appreciate its power and resonance.
“Am I Floating In The Air” combines a pulsating beat with introspective lyrics, exploring themes of exhaustion and the repetitive nature of a demanding life. The chorus of the song captures a sense of resignation and contemplation about the nature of progress and the feeling of being trapped in a never-ending cycle.
As a whole, Uncertain Country with its eleven full-length tracks and four interludes creates an intriguing and thought-provoking experience for the listener. From themes of uncertainty, reflection, renewal, and much more, the album has something for everyone and will relate to fans of all genres and walks of life.
