UK Indie-pop singer Beabadoobee has made her way to Canada to celebrate the release of her newest record, Beatopia. Her music made waves among the gen-z listeners through her signature style of charming, confessional DIY bedroom recordings. Since the release of her debut single “Coffee,” she has amassed an impressive, dedicated audience. Such was evident on December 1st, 2022, when Beabadoobee, along with Lowertown, played a sold-out show at the History in Toronto.
NY-based Indie-rock outfit Lowertown opened the show. Their performance was highly energetic and met with thousands of screaming fans. Their setlist packed a variety of different styles and sounds. This fusion of genres made for an excellent opener. Sometimes their music drew from grunge, sometimes it felt indie, and sometimes it sounded like 90s alternative. The guitars were sloppy in a way that was raw, emotional, and off-kilter. The drumming was bombastic at times. The bass playing was laid back. The vocals were riddled with feeling. The whole package came together and created a loud, wild and unique listening experience. Much of their set consisted of songs from their newest album; I Love to Lie. These songs packed a punch and will surely keep listeners engaged. The music was vulnerable and opened a window into the soul of Lowertown. A breath of fresh air.
Beabadoobee‘s set was everything a fan could have hoped for. This UK artist has plenty of viral singles, and they were all represented here. It’s amazing to see how many hits were packed into this concert. The band that backs Beabadoobee is top-notch. The format of this ensemble was simple which allowed the genius of these songs to shine through. Bea has an incredible knack for hooks and anthems. Much of the lyrics are easy to memorize and allow the fans to feel like active participants. Every song had the crowd singing along. Concertgoers were encouraged to dance and jump around, which they did. The command that Beabadoobee has over the crowd was simply fantastic. It’s no wonder that her music made such a strong impression on the music-listening youth of today. While small in stature, Beabadoobee is undeniably larger than life. The impact she will make on future generations will surely be brought up in due time.
The “Beatopia” tour was an excellent representation of what the kids are up to. A young crowd that proves that these styles of music are still relevant and exciting. It was an incredible showcase of what we could see from the rock-oriented audience’s future. If you are a fan of pop, indie, or rock music, I highly recommend throwing both these acts into your listening rotation. If you can catch one of these shows (many of which are sold out), you’ll experience a delightful, feel-good performance from talented up-and-comers.”
