Nicole Ariana shares her latest single, “Master of Denial”

Nicole Ariana celebrates the release of Master of Denial, a new single anchored in a brooding dancehall beat, staccato guitar lines, and ethereal samples.

Accompanied by a stunning music video, “Master of Denial” was co-written with Grammy-nominated songwriters Laura Roy and Geo Jordan (Doja Cat – “Planet Her”) and co-produced by Jordan and Breagh Isabel, a Nova Scotian heavy-hitter who earned a gold record for Classified’s “Good News.”

“Master of Denial” sets the stage for CRYBABY, the debut full-length from Nicole Ariana slated for release on October 13, 2022. Fusing hypnotic Alt-RnB/Pop vocals with moody electronic production, the LP brings to light a young woman’s longing for lost love in dark times, trying to fill the void in dim corners and old memories. Channeling the notion of addictive love as a constant, CRYBABY stays true to Ariana’s affinity for sensual and melancholy underground sonics, catchy hooks, and pop-oriented production.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Nicole Ariana. I’m a songwriter and RnB/Pop artist based in Halifax. I started singing hooks in Hip Hop bands and then started writing for myself and eventually others. As long as I’m being creative, I’m pretty content.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

My most recent release is a single and music video for my song “Master of Denial.” I wrote it in the UK with my long-time bestie Laura Roy and her partner Geo Jordan who co-produced it with fellow Nova Scotian Breagh Isabel. It’s always been really well received at shows, so I knew it had to be on my upcoming record and be a focus single. We decided we wanted to bring a more organic element to the track like it translates live, so I asked my friends Keith Doiron and Mark Bachynski to lay some live bass and drums on the track, which really took it to the next level. I teamed up with Griffin O’Toole and MOOSECANFLY, who directed and made the video what it is. My friend Moira Lilith also helped with styling and makeup. It was a blast making this song and video from start to finish. One of my favourite releases to date, for sure.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Most of my songs have been inspired by some form of heartbreak or relationship gone wrong. When I’m writing for others or for pitch, though, sometimes the songs are happy. 🙂

Do you have any upcoming shows or festivals you’d like to tell us about?

I’m celebrating the release of my debut album CRYBABY on October 13 at The Seahorse Tavern here in Halifax. I have Yohvn Blvck, Shanii22, and DJ T-Woo on the bill, and I created some sick limited-quantity merch! So excited. I’m also playing Nova Scotia Music Week in Cape Breton in November, which is always a blast and an amazing opportunity to play and attend.

What’s your goal for 2022?

My goal for 2022 is to release CRYBABY and just finally have a full project out in the world. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s going to feel so amazing to have more music out there for people to hear! 2023 will be all about touring and promoting, and writing more new music, but for now, making the most of this release is the goal.
