Platinum-Selling Country Artist Dan Davidson To Release Steamy New Single “Buckle Rubbin’”
Canadian country artist, songwriter, and producer Dan Davidson returns July 7 with his steamy new single “Buckle Rubbin’”, produced by Jeff Dalziel and released via Skysong Records / The Orchard.
A playful and bold anthem, “Buckle Rubbin’” also marks the first official release from Skysong Records, the boutique label co-founded by Davidson, Jason McCoy, Clayton Bellamy (The Road Hammers), and music exec Craig Senyk.
Best known for his platinum hit “Found”, Davidson has racked up over 40 million streams, 17 CCMA nominations, and a global touring resume. Now, with “Buckle Rubbin’” kicking off a hot new chapter, we caught up with him to talk music, mischief, and making moves in country’s evolving landscape.
First off, what have you been up to since we last spoke?
Oh, jeez, I don’t remember when we last spoke! It’s been too long, haha, thanks again for taking the time to chat today! Well, honestly, it’s been a pretty wild year. One of those “behind the scenes” years, where it seems quiet on the outside, but behind closed doors, I’ve never been busier setting up 2025/2026. First off, my new record label with Jason McCoy and Clayton Bellamy has been a HUGE part of my last year. We’ve got a great team of people around us, great partners all over the world, and have found a way to make a label that’s ‘for artists, by artists’. Couldn’t be more excited about that!
I’m also working on a kids’ TV show called ‘Dan Sandwich’ – this has been so much fun. We’ve got a ton of interest from some pretty big networks, so we are trying to make this thing as hilarious and professional as possible. It’s absolutely ridiculous – it’s like the Muppets meets PeeWee’s Playhouse, meets Yo Gabba Gabba. We are having a lot of laughs making this. My partners on this include some names you might know! Travis Nesbitt (video director of the year for the CCMAs) and James Murdoch (from the Dungarees), to name a couple!
ALSO! I’m now hosting a morning radio show on CFCW, which is something I never saw coming! This is such a cool gig. I love people, I love talking, and I love country music – so this is perfectly complementary to what I do as an artist!
“Buckle Rubbin’” is bold, fun, and definitely steamy—what inspired the song’s cheeky tone and vibe?
Well, sometimes someone just says something in passing that sounds like a song. That’s what happened here. I was hanging with Clayton Bellamy from the Road Hammers… and I don’t know what we were talking about, but he kinda said the phrase “buckle rubbin’” and I thought to myself “I need to write that one day”. So I brought it into a session with my friends Emma-Lee and David Borys, and they agreed, it was too perfect to NOT write. Honestly, that title writes itself. It’s all about taking the chance and letting yourself fall in love on the dance floor. It’s a ‘get drunk and fall in love song’ haha!
This single was produced by Jeff Dalziel, who’s worked with some big names. What was the studio process like for this one?
Jeff and I have worked together since 2005, if you can believe that! 20 years of making music together! He first worked on my rock band, Tupelo Honey, back then, and since those days, we’ve had a few great hits together, including my song “Found,” which went Platinum. I love the guy, he’s a close friend, and a guy I learn from and lean on lots. He’s encouraged me to explore my own production skills, and just kind of understands the journey. Some years we do 1 song, some years we do 10 – definitely a big part of my journey in this business. In regards to what it’s like working with Jeff – we live so far apart that we do a lot remotely. Lots of sending files back and forth and LOTS of phone calls where we talk about hockey for 90% of the time and actually get to the music part for the last 10%
“Buckle Rubbin’” also marks the debut release from your new label, Skysong Records. What sparked the idea to start your own label?
We wanted to make something that was artist-focused and artist-driven. It’s so hard in this business as an indie. We decided that if we let our powers combine and build a great team, we could create our own luck. So far it’s looking VERY promising, seems like lots of excitement about the label!
Since your breakout with “Found,” you’ve had quite the run—40 million+ streams, global tours, major syncs. What moment has meant the most so far?
I think receiving a Platinum record was a hard high to beat. Never in a million years did I think I could get to that as an indie artist. There were a few “resume” moments that were beyond my bucket list! I think the first time I played in Europe, and the first time I played in Australia, were up there for me as well. Anytime you find out that people who live thousands of kilometers from you are singing the words to your songs – that’s a great feeling.
With “Buckle Rubbin’” kicking off this next chapter, what can fans expect next—more music, videos, a tour?
I’ve got about 6-7 songs done for the next record, I’ve shot 2 music videos so far, and I’ve got tour dates all over the world coming together! So I’ll be obnoxious on the internet VERY soon! (I probably already am… haha!)
