Lost Pitch shares new single, “Speaking Silences” (Interview)

Toronto Rockers LOST PITCH Bring Back The 90s In New Single “Speaking Silences”

Toronto indie rockers Lost Pitch continue their ascent with the release of Speaking Silences, a mesmerizing new single that captures the dark beauty of love, control, and obsession. Channeling the rich textures of ‘90s alternative rock, the Toronto-based band draws inspiration from the likes of Oasis, Radiohead, and The Verve, crafting a sound that is both nostalgic and fiercely original. With Speaking Silences, Lost Pitch isn’t just delivering a song—they’re building an immersive world.

Speaking Silences is about the kind of love that blinds you,” shares songwriter Erick Vidal. “The kind where you don’t realize you’re losing yourself until it’s too late.” Inspired by a close friend’s toxic relationship, the song’s melancholic dreamscape unravels into a slow-burning nightmare, a sonic journey shaped by Abbey Road Studios’ legendary mastering engineer Frank Arkwright (Oasis, The Verve, Blur).

To accompany the track, Lost Pitch is unveiling two distinct videos—a raw, vintage-inspired performance video, shot in Toronto, and a cinematic short film, a thriller dripping with mystery and hidden clues.

Filmed during one of Toronto’s most intense snowstorms, the short film immerses viewers in a world of seduction, secrecy, and deception, with visual storytelling that lingers long after the final frame.

“Speaking Silences” follows Lost Pitch’s well-received 2024 debut EP Friends & Foes, which introduced their signature mix of melodic storytelling and immersive soundscapes. The band—Erick Vidal (vocals/guitar), Leandro Motta (vocals/bass), Ricardo Santos (guitar), and Alex Mine (drums)—has quickly established itself as a formidable force in indie and alternative rock, even gaining international recognition for their animated music video Not So Sure (Excalibur?).

As anticipation builds for their upcoming full-length album, Speaking Silences is a bold artistic statement—one that challenges listeners to look beyond the surface. Because sometimes, the loudest truths are the ones left unspoken.

Hi Erick! Good to meet you! Care to introduce yourselves to the readers?

Sure! We are Lost Pitch, an indie rock band from the Toronto area. Our sound blends analog tones, modern production, and a mix of eclectic influences. The band consists of Erick Vidal (Guitar/Vocals), Leandro Motta (Bass/Vocals), Ricardo Santos (Guitar), and Alex Mine (Drums).

“Speaking Silences” explores themes of love, control, and obsession. What drew you to this subject matter, and how did your personal experiences shape the song?

The song was inspired by a close friend’s toxic relationship—one where love blurred reality, and control masqueraded as care. She couldn’t see how his demands kept tightening around her, while those of us on the outside watched helplessly. “Speaking Silences” captures that blindness—the slow unraveling of a love that isn’t love at all.

You’ve cited Oasis, Radiohead, and The Verve as inspirations. How do you balance these influences while maintaining Lost Pitch’s distinct identity?

We’re quite eclectic, and that will become even more apparent in our upcoming album. Our identity is shaped by our influences and life experiences. As Lavoisier said, “Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed.” We take different musical ingredients, mix them in our own way, and that’s what makes our sound unique.

If we had to name one major influence, it would be The Beatles. That said, Britpop—especially the ‘90s movement—shaped my songwriting in so many ways because I lived through it. In “Speaking Silences,” that influence is front and center, from the composition to the production. The ‘60s and ‘90s produced so much timeless rock music—songs that still sound fresh today. That’s what we aim for. While our music has a nostalgic touch, we hope it will stand the test of time for future listeners.

The song was mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios. How did that collaboration come about, and what impact did it have on the final sound of the track?

Our collaboration with Frank Arkwright began with our debut EP, Friends & Foes, and we absolutely loved how it sounded. He’s a true master of mastering—he’s worked with so many of our favorite ‘90s bands, like Blur, Oasis, Johnny Marr, and Belle & Sebastian. His ability to capture the vintage vibe of our sound while preserving the analog warmth we love is incredible.

With the momentum of this release, what can fans expect next from Lost Pitch? Is there a full-length album in the works?

Absolutely! We’re working on our full-length album, which we plan to release in the second half of this year. This record will showcase different sides of our music, incorporating a variety of influences—including some that are less mainstream but deeply personal to us.

Before the album drops, we’ll be releasing new singles to give fans a taste of what’s coming. We want to build anticipation and offer a glimpse into the evolution of our sound. Stay tuned!
