After going viral on Instagram in both India and Canada, Spitty is poised to continue to grow exponentially with upcoming shows in Toronto on September 29th at Global Toronto Music Festival and October 12th at The Dance Cave in Lee’s Palace.
Pre-save Motherland here.
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Whattup readers, I go by Spitty I’m an Indian-Canadian rapper from Brampton, ON who makes conscious bangers that’s often inspired by my South Asian heritage.
Your album, Motherland is described as a South Asian inspired hip hop album. Can you tell us about the creative process behind blending your heritage and upbringing into your music?
When I first started making music I never really made the connection. But ever since I was young and listened to hip hop, I especially loved hearing Indian samples being used. It wasn’t until more recently that I actually incorporated this flavor myself. I first did it on my debut album Full Circle, and at the same time was growing globally, especially in India. That was 2021, and over the past 3 years, I’ve really focused on growing both in Canada and in India. I even went to India for 2 straight months to work with artists, shoot videos, and soak in the culture and music scene. From then on, I’ve been working on this album blending the two cultures I grew up with in an authentic way.
What was it like collaborating with artists from Canada, India, and the US on this album?
It’s been a long yet rewarding process. The first single off the album was Around The World, and that’s really what it’s been about. Connecting the world through music. There are different languages and genres here, but above all else, if the music connects, it will carry over to a global audience. Those countries are also where my audience mainly is, so I hope to continue to grow there and eventually do shows.
You worked with producers Nick Ianno and Felix Khan from Star67 Studio on this project. How did their production style complement your vision for the album?
Yeah it’s been great working with them. We’ve been working together since 2022, and so our chemistry is at an all time high now and the process is very streamlined. Any ideas I have can be implemented easily. Felix is of South Asian background as well but mainly works with rappers so he has that deep understanding of both cultures which is perfect.
You’ve been praised for your work representing Brampton through your music and community initiatives. How does your connection to Brampton influence your artistry?
Brampton is what made me. It’s the mix of immigrant cultures here that meant I was listening to hip hop since I was six years old. I grew up around rap, reggae, Bollywood, soca, Punjabi, gospel, classical and so much more. Beyond the music, Brampton has so many communities and is a family-oriented city, and that’s definitely influenced me and my community initiatives. I see the potential in our city and want to help it blossom.
Your debut album “Full Circle” received a lot of attention and praise. How has your approach to music and storytelling evolved from “Full Circle” to “Motherland”?
Full Circle was an album I made for me. It was my debut album and something I worked on for 3 years. I feel like it was my base, and I needed to make that to then allow myself to continue to grow and experiment. With Motherland, I made this album for the people, for the world. It’s bigger than me, and I see great potential with it taking off and impacting people in a real way.
With the release of “Motherland,” what’s next for you? Are there any upcoming projects or goals you’re excited about?
I’m excited to be performing at the Small World Music Festival in Toronto on September 29. I’ll be putting out videos, content, merch and much more around the album, and am also plotting more shows in other cities both in and outside of Canada. My goal is to continue to grow my fanbase and take over the world.
