First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey! Thanks for having me here. I’m Yung Leo. I’m a singer-songwriter. I’m currently based out of Montreal, my hometown.
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your upcoming single “Too Good”?
Absolutely! “Too Good” is about moving on from a toxic relationship. Those are so hard to move on from because they tend to undermine your self-esteem a great deal. I wanted to write this song about rebirth to give people something to hold onto when they feel alone in the world. I wrote the chorus like a mantra, with the power to help you regain your strength as you’re trying to put your pieces back together.
What was the collaborative process like working with producer Luca The Producer on “Too Good”? How did his style complement your vision for the song?
“Too Good” has been my favorite song to work on to date. It started with this idea of a super emotionally charged piano ballad – think “Praying” by Kesha, haha. We recorded the whole thing, and I was like, “this is not it.” So, we went to hang out in the next room in the studio. Luca was sitting at the board, and I was at the piano. I heard him whisper to Britt, and she creeped up behind me. She goes, “Hey Leo, feel free to tell me what you think, but we would like to try a drum-n-bass beat on your song if you’re comfortable with that.” We went and re-recorded the whole song right away. We did very few vocal takes. It felt like the song suddenly found itself.
Your sound has been described as authentic and unapologetically yourself. How do you navigate staying true to your musical identity while also experimenting with different genres and styles?
Haha, that’s true. I mean, people do often feel that way about me. But honestly, working with people who genuinely care to hear what I have to say has helped me build trust, and it quickly became a two-way street. Transparency and honesty create a very safe environment for experimenting with different genres and styles while staying true to myself.
As the iHeart Radio “Future Star,” how has this recognition impacted your career trajectory and artistic approach?
It honestly opened a lot of doors. It was a lot all at once though, plus I was going through a breakup at the time… I had to take some time off to process everything. It didn’t change my artistic approach, but it made me stronger, I think, and helped me realize what I need.
What’s up next for you in 2024?
Ngl, we’ve got some pretty cool projects in the works. I can’t delve too much into the details just yet, but I’m excited about what’s in store for Fall…
