The Canadian Folk Music Awards were in St. John’s, NL this past weekend and there was no shortage of great talent.
Thursday, April 4th had a showcase specifically for NL musicians at the newly renovated & reopened Majestic Theatre. It’s a beautiful space that was perfect for the evening. Opening the show was Darcy Scott, who was the 2023 recipient of MusicNL’s Folk Artist of the Year award.
Next up was a duo who are originally from Brazil but are now based out of St. John’s, Ana & Eric.
Fresh off touring that brought them all the way to Australia, Quote The Raven provided some great music and some great stories as well.
Closing out the show was Kubasonics, a Ukranian-Canadian group. As always, they were high-energy and a great show to watch.
Friday, April 5th brought us to the LSPU hall, a more intimate venue, for the Songs and Stories showcase. This is where some very talented songwriters showcased their music. The evening was hosted by two young artists from Newfoundland, Paige Penney and Abigale. They even started the show with a song they wrote specifically for the event.
The first half of the evening showcased Steven Taetz, Cynthia Hamar, and Dans L’Shed. After all the acts performed, they joined together for a song they wrote together that day.
The second half of the evening had Hannah Shira Naiman, Marie-Ève Laure, and Noah Zacharin grace the stage. For their group song, they chose to do a rendition of a Newfoundland classic “By The Glow of the Kerosene Light”, which resulted in a standing ovation.
