SunnyStone releases new single, “Memory” (Interview)

Canadian Pop Sensation SunnyStone Releases ‘MEMORY’: A Melodic Journey of Nostalgia and Reflection

Music can shape lives through the simple thought of it. That is how the pop singer SunnyStone, a new voice in Canada, lives life. From the peaceful village of Kondapi, nestled in the heart of Andhra Pradesh, India, SunnyStone’s musical journey takes flight.

From modest origins, SunnyStone’s journey from a small-town enthusiast to a blossoming musical talent in Canada is truly remarkable. At just 14 years old, SunnyStone unearthed his musical gift while singing in the corridors of PPS, his school in Andhra Pradesh.

Though met with opposition from his family, he remained determined, finding encouragement and support from teachers who helped him develop his musical abilities.

Despite trying to focus on another career, he found himself thinking about life and listening to “Do or Die – Remix by Thirty Seconds to Mars & Afrojack” and suddenly decided that was the moment to change his life. “I need to become a Pop singer and I want to move to any English-speaking country so I can do that”, he mentions.

Calling Canada home since 2019, SunnyStone wasted no time in honing his craft, enrolling in vocal training under the tutelage of Pete Palazzolo at the Canadian Conservatory of Music in Windsor. This marked the inception of a remarkable metamorphosis – from a Masters’ student by day to a burgeoning musician by night.

After completing his training, SunnyStone’s creativity was heightened, leading to the release of three cover songs on YouTube. Building on this momentum, he showcased his talent to the world with his debut single, “Make You Feel,” followed by the heartfelt release of “End To My Love.”

Now SunnyStone welcomes his 3rd single “MEMORY”, a melodic exploration of nostalgia and introspection.

“While driving one day, the hook “Like A Memory, Like A Memory, Like A Memory…” struck me. A few days later, during a late-night drive from downtown Toronto to my home in Etobicoke, I found myself halted at numerous red lights, feeling frustrated by the repetitive pause. It dawned on me that I wanted to craft a song about this experience, to tell its story,” he says.

Starting with just a hook, the song grew into a personal reflection on resilience. Inspired by the serene moments of everyday life, its creation amidst the gentle glow of stoplights shows SunnyStone’s appreciation for life’s small pleasures.

‘When I was driving on the road
I saw the redlight stopping me
When I was living alone
I felt like someone was watching me
Whenever I wanna skip this track
There’s something else dragging me
Like a memory

While thinking about the lyrics, SunnyStone thought about his own memories back home, all the difficulties he encountered in his path, and all the dreams he has yet to accomplish. Combined with a melody that can only be described as enlightening the feeling of nostalgia, “MEMORY” will make you think about your very own memories.

Care to introduce yourself?

I am Sunny Stone, I am a Pop Singer born in Kondapi a small village in India, but living currently in Mississauga, Canada. My original name is Sandeep Yanamadni, All my life I studied Bachelor’s & Master’s in Mechanical Engineering but I love music as well. When I was a kid I wanted to become a singer but I never shared this with anyone.

My parents wanted me to focus on studying engineering and to become an engineer.  So I studied engineering subjects during the day times and worked on music at night. I moved to Windsor, Canada for music in 2019 but to my parents, I said I was going to study master’s in mechanical engineering at UoW.

Well from them I made a few cover songs and after my 3rd cover song, I decided to make my own songs from then. I love writing songs, creating melodies with my voice, and making songs based on my thoughts and my past experiences. So, I moved to Toronto in 2021 and I made a single called “Make You Feel” I wrote this song about my love for a girl that I had feelings for her from the past 7 years. Then next year, I released  “End To My Love” This song is about to say that my love has ended for her. Now, This is my 3rd single called “Memory” I made this song because I have a lot of memories and they keep coming to my mind every day So I made this song.

So, This is my story an Engineer turned to be a Pop Singer.

Tell us about the process of recording “Memory”?

I recorded this song in my friend’s studio (Dream Child recording studio) here in Mississauga with my producer DJay. I used to live in North York and I drove to Mississauga to record this song  At first, We started recording this song in May 2023 and after a week of listening to it, I felt there was something wrong with the melody – The melody was a little bit out of what I imagined So, I re-recorded the whole song. It took us almost 2-3 weeks to record the whole song.

My main vision for this song is to start the song slowly and to gradually increase the tempo for the pre-chorus with multiple layers and the chorus should be loud, fast tempo with drums, instruments, and multiple layers of vocals.

Initially, I did not plan to add any harmonies to the chorus and to the 2nd verse, But my producer suggested adding harmonies would sound better then based on his suggestion we recorded harmonies and it turned out to be very good for the song. Additionally, when we were recording the pre-chorus I got an idea for the outro as [Memory ee Memory ee Memory ee Memory ee…] when we recorded this and listened to it sounded amazing So I arranged the same format in the middle of the song just after chorus 1.

The main roadblock we faced in the song was after recording and in the mixing stage. I spent a lot of hours in mixing the song with my mixing engineer I did not get the desired output we had almost 10 revisions But, it did not work. So After that, I took the help of another mixing engineer and we re-recorded some parts of the verse and chorus again in his studio. Then we worked on mixing and mastering the song for almost 2 months.  He gave me almost 6 revisions and finally got the desired output in the Nov 2023.

What’s it like being an artist in Mississauga?

I used to live in Etobicoke and North York, Now, I moved to Mississauga just 5 months ago. I travel to Toronto downtown for all my music events and open mics because Mississauga does not have many options. However, Mississauga has an art center that I visited only once. In terms of living, I find my neighborhood is quiet peaceful, and calm.  I love the port credit in Mississauga it is my favorite place during summer. I spent hours and hours here enjoying the view and the atmosphere.

Who was the first and most recent Canadian artist to blow you away?

The first artist that I know from Canada is Justin Bieber, I knew this when I was a kid. The most recent artist to blow me away is Tate McRae. I really love her songs. I hope to meet her and work with her in the future.

You’ve been making music for a bit of time now, what’s one piece of advice you can offer to those starting out?

My best advice to the newcomers is, do not consider your results when you are not practicing, consider your results only when you practiced a lot and you gave your best of best.

For example- I observed this within myself when I was singing a song without any practice my output was not that great. However, If I practice a song for a week and then I perform my output will be amazing. So practice is the key and consider results only after giving your best.

My second piece of advice is to analyze and find your mistakes in your previous songs and try to fix all of them in your next song. For example (Lyrics, Song structure & arrangement, Flow of melody, and vocals)

In this process

– Do not get afraid of people’s opinions
– try not to overthink about your future results
– do not look at your numbers
– try to make a fine-quality song
