oh caroline Unveils Debut Full-Length Album, Monochrome
Indie/pop trio oh caroline shares their full-length album Monochrome, out now via Friends of Friends. The album was released alongside the focus track “Second Chances“.
This past week, the band also unveiled a music video for their single, “Wisdom Teeth.”
The international trio merges three unique existences to create a nostalgic soundscape with unmistakable depth. Aiming to take you back to the crisp fall air of your childhood, the band creates a sentimental narrative by reflecting back to simpler times. The group is composed of Boston’s William Breeuwsma (Towerz), Winnipeg’s Lhasa Petik, and their newest member Thomas Bråttvik (Hanz). Welcoming Thomas this past year has resulted in oh caroline’s’ sound blossoming from a melancholic lofi-folk duo to an experimental pop trio. Individually spanning multiple genres, the members play into their respective strengths and tastes to effortlessly hop between them. The project, now lush with electronic elements, has become more mature and polished while still maintaining the rawness of its early days.
The three members have individually spent the last year navigating the growing pains of being a band in three very different places and creating their debut full-length album. The result has been a carefully curated 12-track project that strives to revitalize your childlike wonder and encourages listeners to find solace in the small things in life. Dropping their first single this summer, oh caroline can’t wait to take you on an emotional journey of changing times and changing perspectives.
First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Heyo! We are oh caroline, a three-piece band spanning across borders, with William Breeuwsma from the States, Thomas Brattvik from Norway, and Lhasa Petik from Canada. Our musical influences draw from the likes of Bon Iver, Bakar, and The Postal Service, and we aim to blend indie vibes with electronic pop elements to create a warm and lush atmosphere. Our aim is to genre jump while still maintaining a somewhat consistent sound, but we like to keep our listeners on their toes.
Tell us a bit about your recent release
Our debut album, Monochrome, dropped on February 9th, which is a big moment in our journey as a band. The creation process has been a labor of love and has been a journey in itself. Despite the distance, we managed to finish our album by bouncing demos and stems back and forth throughout the last couple of years. The album is anything but ‘monochrome, and we’ve tried to venture across a wide variety of genres, with the ultimate goal of surprising listeners without giving them too much whiplash. The album has a lot of lyrics that I (Lhasa) have saved for a special project, and I’m so happy that this album is where they ended up. WIlliam and Thomas are both so incredibly talented, and they helped breathe life into words that I’ve kept close to my heart for a long time.
How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?
Being spread out across the globe definitely has its challenges, but we make it work by bouncing stems back and forth until we feel a track is complete. Time zones make it tricky to hop on calls as well, so we mainly communicate through texting, we have pretty great trust in one another, and know that whoever touches the project next will do a great job.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?
We’re gearing up to drop our music video for our track “Wisdom Teeth.” Shot this past summer in the scenic backdrop of Cape Cod, the setting was a perfect pairing with the warm and heartfelt vibes of the song. This track holds a special place in my heart because its lyrics poured out in 15 minutes on a rainy day that I remember quite vividly. Watching the final cut of the music video made me a bit emotional, and I hope viewers and listeners feel even a fraction of what I did.
Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?
Getting a shoutout from Billboard Canada was a pretty cool moment, but we’re just stoked to see people bumping our tunes. We are a fairly new band, so we weren’t sure what to expect, but we’ve been super fortunate to have gotten a decent amount of love from Spotify and Apple Music, which has exposed us to a much larger fanbase. Pumped to have y’all here <3
Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?
Oh gosh, there are so many, but some that stand out to us are Afternoon Bike Ride, Begonia, Charles the Emperor, ASHWARYA, and LORA.
