JEEN Releases Gold Control Record Co-Produced with Ian Blurton
JEEN has unveiled her album Gold Control, a luminous ten tracker gliding along the same trajectory as its predecessors while maintaining its own identity. Grunge. Garage. Psych-rock. Punk. Tinges of Shoegaze. Her influences continue to shine as she crafts them into her own vehicle with ease. It’s hazy, heady, hedonistic, and hopeful. JEEN joins creative forces once again with long-time collaborator Canadian indie musician and producer Ian Blurton who has taken the role of co-producer on JEEN’s last five albums.
“‘Pour Your Heart’ was the first song we recorded for Gold Control,” JEEN shares. “It’s a laid-back track about searching for lights in the dark. I loved making this record. We recorded Gold Control at a pretty rough time for me personally so I was grateful to have the work as a distraction. I honestly don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t make music for a living so I’m just really thankful to be making these albums.”
First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m Jeen and I’m a recording artist from Ontario, Canada.
Tell us a bit about your recent release.
My new album Gold Control came out Feb 2nd and it’s a 10-song LP co-produced by Ian Blurton and myself. We released a few singles from it last year and the final single, “So What”, came out mid-January. The album was recorded early last year in Toronto at ProGold.
How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?
I don’t really have a specific writing method or any firm rules except I definitely stop writing if/when I realize it’s a dead end. I’ll usually start a song by playing some simple guitar or synth part I like and then see if I can get a decent melody to go over it. if it doesn’t catch me in some way though I’ll just trash it before I get too far. Pretty basic. But sometimes I’ll have a few notes or a melody line randomly pop into my head so I’ve learned to pay attention to that too…make sure I record any decent fleeting ideas quickly so I don’t forget it before I have the chance to lay it down for real.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?
I’m hoping to play some shows in Ontario this April and beyond to support the new album. Of course, I’d love to do more extensive touring if I can.
Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?
I had fun being in the band Cookie Duster and just generally writing with other artists over the years has been something I’ve always really loved doing. I also randomly did some singing/songwriting work on the cartoon Ruby Gloom years ago (theme song etc) which was fun too
Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?
