Laura Lucas – Five Questions With

Laura Lucas Releases New EP, The Dreamer

Canadian-born, Australian-based singer-songwriter Laura Lucas’ introspective, dreamy songwriting and delicately powerful vocals are on full display across her new EP The Dreamer.

Recorded in Melbourne alongside platinum award-winning artist and producer Dustin Tebbutt, the EP interweaves themes of longing, vulnerability, clarity, and hope, with lush soundscapes of both organic and electronic sounds carrying Laura’s signature intimate storytelling.

Of the EP, Laura says,

“In a way, all of these songs are about wanting – wanting and not having, wanting and being afraid of the thing you want, wanting and having to let go, or realising you don’t want the thing you thought you wanted. It’s not always easy to know what you want, and I think these songs reflect someone who is in the process of figuring that out.”

The Dreamer follows Laura’s 2022 debut EP Light the Candle, Hold the Mirror, which was recorded entirely remotely between Canada and Australia with producer Garrett Kato.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello! My name is Laura Lucas. I’m a singer-songwriter from Winnipeg but I moved to Melbourne, Australia a couple of years ago. I make indie-folk music and love songwriting as a way to express myself and document what I’m feeling.

When I’m not writing, recording, or releasing music, I can be found writing my PhD thesis, doing yoga, reading Mieko Kawakami novels, or going for walks and talking to the birds at the botanic gardens near my house.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

I have just released my new EP “The Dreamer”. I recorded it with Dustin Tebbutt in Melbourne. I’m very proud of the songs and had so much fun making them! It was cool to see how my songwriting and sound has evolved since my first EP. I feel like I’m learning to trust myself a bit more which is nice. One of my favourite tracks from the collection is “I Imagine You Are Happy.” I wrote and recorded it as a duet with my label mate Lawson Hull, who is one of my favourite songwriters.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

Yes! I will be doing a national tour in Australia hosted by Sofar Sounds in early 2024. Sofar shows are always in really cool venues and the audiences are always so kind, so I’m looking forward to that.

If given the chance, which Canadian artist would you love to work with in the future?

It’s extremely hard to choose just one, but the first person that comes to mind is Luca Fogale. He has a beautiful way of making seemingly simple songs that carry so much emotional weight. “Nothing is Lost” is a song I come back to over and over and over.

What’s your goal for 2024?

My goal for 2024 is to write and record my first album! I really want to focus on writing from my most authentic self. It’s so easy to get caught up in thinking about what other people are going to like or what is popular at the moment, while also feeling pressure to be constantly releasing music. I want to make music that is true to me and to make it in a way that feels good. I want to slow down and take my time.
