Ethan Lyric – “Messing Things Up Again” (Single Review)

Winnipeg-born Indigenous Artist, Ethan Lyric Releases New Single, “Messing Things Up Again”

Winnipeg, Canada-born Indigenous musician and songwriter Ethan Lyric creates charming indie folk songs to soothe the soul.

Following his 2021 debut album, Four Divided by Three and Whatever’s Left To See, and recent single, “I Love You More,” Lyric has unveiled “Messing Things Up Again,” the second single from his much anticipated EP, Saskatoon Berries (out November 24, 2023).

Initially introduced through a friend at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Lyric teamed up with Jeremy Haywood-Smith (JayWood) on the production and recording of the track, and the rest of the forthcoming EP.

“Messing Things Up Again is a lot more Indie leaning than anything I have put out to date and I think that it is a perfect example of the influence my producer JayWood had on the project. We worked together to create the lead guitar li ne that runs throughout the song and just had so much fun doing it.”

Review

“Messing Things Up Again” effectively captures the theme of self-doubt and the perpetual feeling of making mistakes in life. The lyrics vividly portray someone who continually second-guesses their choices, perpetually convinced that they’re on the wrong path.

The lines, “Look into those same eyes, you tell me look too long you’ll be hypnotized,” hint at the idea of getting lost in someone’s gaze and possibly making mistakes in the process. It adds a layer of vulnerability and emotional depth to the song.

The repeated chorus, “I guess I’m just messing things up again, and you won’t have it,” underscores the helplessness and the feeling that others might not tolerate or understand these perceived mistakes. This adds a striking layer of emotional resonance to the song.

In summary, “Messing Things Up Again” is a relatable and emotionally powerful gem in the indie folk-pop landscape, delving deep into the universal challenge of self-doubt and the apprehension of making erroneous decisions.
