Lauryn Macfarlane – Five Questions With

Emerging Alt-Pop Artist Lauryn Macfarlane Allows Herself to “Dive” Fully into Love on New Single

As a rising Canadian alt-pop artist, Lauryn Macfarlane‘s honest and vulnerable songwriting style and personality are what draw audiences in and leave them wanting more. Having opened for and shared bills with various acts including Aysanabee, Chantel Kreviazuk, Donovan Woods, and Kathleen Edwards, Lauryn has honed in on a presence and aura onstage that commands attention. In the summer of 2022, she had the opportunity to go to Los Angeles and work with Montreal-born producer Jason Kellner. The Montreal-based artist’s brand new single, “Dive,” came out of those sessions.

Written right as she was falling madly in love, it’s a fun yet vulnerable song about allowing yourself to fully “Dive” into a relationship with your whole heart, even though you know you could very well be crushed by the wave. This song is the first time a producer has given Lauryn an instrumental to write with free reign on melody and lyrics. To her surprise, it came very easily and is a new way of collaboration that she is eager to pursue more of in the future.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I am a Canadian emerging artist based in Montreal Quebec. Music has always been a huge part of my life, growing up I had a lot of country influences that inspired my songwriting style and vocal performance. But my love for indie pop and unpredictable production moves is what inspires my production style. I moved to Montreal 4 years ago, and in that time I’ve really grown and come into my own. I’m excited about using this new confidence in my songwriting and performing and am looking forward to all opportunities that are going to come!

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

“Dive” was written and recorded over a week when I was in LA last summer working with Jason Kellner. Jason and his friend Matty were brainstorming ideas and creating some vibes off of my reference tracks and they came up with the bare bones of the song. Jason showed it to me the first day I was there and asked if he thought I could write to it. Went home that night and wrote the bulk of it the next morning. We really liked the direction of the song and the energy was great, so we changed our original plans and put most of the energy into Dive. It was written while I was falling in love quickly and hard. It’s about being vulnerable enough to truly let someone in and just completely Dive into the relationship.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

No shows lined up right now. But I’ve got some ideas for a show in Montreal and Peterborough before the year is through. I’ve really been focusing on writing and starting the recording process again to release more music!

If given the chance, which Canadian artist would you love to work with in the future?

I really do listen to a lot of Canadian bands and artists. There is so much great Canadian talent it’s kind of insane. So naturally there are a lot of Canadian artists I’d love to work with. But right now I would say Devan Glover. I feel we would understand each other’s styles very well. I would argue that Wild Rivers has some Folk/Country vibes and her independent project is a lot more Indie/Pop. And it’s all brilliant.

What’s your goal for 2024?

Tour!!!! All I want to do is tour. I want to wake up in a new city every morning, go to a cool cafe, meet cool people, play a show of my own songs to people who get it, and then go to sleep. Even if it’s a small string of shows, I really want to make it happen in 2024.
