Care to introduce yourself?
I am Giorgia, I was born in Italy and grew up in a small village in Northern Tuscany, in a small family. I have one sibling, an older sister. My parents were very busy working hard (they owned a large store that sold sound systems, household appliances, and other household items) to give us what we needed so my grandmother took care of me on a daily basis and she singing for me lullabies to calm me and make me sleep ….I was a very shy and sensitive girl wondering what I was doing on earth….in my teenage years, I was close to the church and volunteered my time to help the elderly and children in need. I joined the Church choir at 16 where I discovered I had a natural soprano voice, to my surprise and to others as well. I studied law at the University of Parma because my parents wanted for me a sure future, but my heart needed to sing so while studying law in Parma, I got accepted at the very prestigious Conservatory of Music in Parma and continued singing in many choirs (soloist) as well as a professional choir, until the day where a Canadian music executive heard my voice while at dinner at Zucchero’s home who was a friend of his and I knew as well on my end. I left Italy and moved to Canada to try to live my dream of music when I was signed by Bruce Lundvall and Ian Ralfini at EMI New York, a deal that my now current manager and the same Canadian music executive found for me. Today 20 years later since my departure from Italy, I recorded 13 albums, sang on 5 continents, and sang for millions of hearts. I am married with 4 children (2 biological, 1 adopted, and 1 in foster family with the possibility of adoption). I practice yoga, meditation, reiki master and follow all well-being practices for a healthy lifestyle. I have never smoked, never used drugs, never had alcohol and contrary to most Italians, do not drink coffee….
Tell us about the process of recording “Over The Rainbow?”
I have always loved to sing songs stemming from movies. This song is one of my childhood favourites so very easy to pick and record. The arrangements were done by my producer, Stefano Galante, and the song and video clip were recorded in Montreal.
I enjoy the lyrics very much and the song is a perfect choice for my voice.
What’s it like being a musician in Montreal?
Montreal is a beautiful City with a cosmopolitan and universal flavour. It is a unique city with a strong flavour of Europe. Montreal and the province of Quebec embrace music from all spheres and the French-speaking audience is fantastic, respectful, and loves the music I perform.
My audience is very large and includes all kinds of nationalities and from Montreal, we travel the world to sing in many other countries.
Who was the first Canadian artist to blow you away?
I always really enjoyed Loreena McKennitt and followed her music even while I was living in Italy. She is probably the first Canadian artist I enjoyed and influenced me somewhat. Other artists I enjoy very much include Sarah McLachlan and Celine Dion.
You’ve been making music for a while now, what’s one piece of advice you can offer to those starting out?
You grow with their talent, to respect themselves, and not try to change depending on the business and what is commercial. To stay strong and to enjoy the gift of doing music without depending on the fact that they need to become famous or lose themselves in the ego game of success.
