Vic Anthony

Artist: Victoria Anthony
Album: New Disaster
Release Date: May 12, 2023
Genre: Pop

Vancouver, BC-based pop artist Victoria Anthony shared her 13-song album, New Disaster on May 12, 2023. The album features seven previously released singles, including the hits, “Should’ve Known,” “Kinda Into You,” and “Stupid Kid.” Just those three singles alone amassed over 1 million streams to date, proving Victoria has something pop music fans are craving!

The title track, “New Disaster” begins the album with lyrics urging the listener to embrace the unknown despite potential consequences. This track showcases the feelings that many young people go through with new relationships, the mix of attraction and urgency combined with the need to be rebellious and experience something new. The beat throughout the track is consistent and upbeat, combining perfectly with Victoria’s anthemic vocals.

“Better Boyfriend” follows suit with an upbeat pop-driven beat, and possesses a perfect sing-along style chorus with a focus on needing a healthier relationship, setting boundaries, and knowing your self-worth. The lyrics of the chorus portray just this, “Oh you’ll never change, too many times I’ve settled for less, I’m gonna need a better boyfriend.

“Your Mom” showcases a slightly darker, pop-punk side of Victoria’s music, while still staying in the pop lane. I was instantly taken back to my teenage years, with reminders of Avril Lavigne. On the track, Victoria sings of a partner she needs to cut loose. One thing is certainly apparent with her music, she has an insane talent for writing a killer chorus. “I took your t-shirt and burned it, You cut my heart out on purpose, You want a kiss but I pass, I won’t forgive you like that, You knock me down and you like it, You find my misery exciting, Said things you’ll never take back, Do you kiss your mom with a mouth like that?” is the perfect example of that.

“Non-Existent Love Life” is the type of track that you can’t help but picture being performed live, with the crowd jumping around, belting out the lyrics along with Victoria. The energy through this track pulses constantly, keeping the listener hyped up. I personally love tempo changes from verses to choruses, and how flawlessly Victoria’s voice changes to suit each style.

Overall, each song on the release does a stellar job of relating to the listener, as Victoria’s writing is 100% relatable, and the upbeat, anthemic choruses only solidify that fact. Victoria has shown without any question that she’s got what it takes to achieve greatness in the pop industry, and beyond.
