GreenWing unveil their latest single, “Dark”
GreenWing is proud to announce the release of their new single, “Dark”. “Dark” builds upon the groundwork laid by the band’s 2022 debut album by embodying an overarching sense of pop lyricism juxtaposed against a hard-hitting rhythm section and slamming guitars. Drummer Kolt Kimbley describes the band’s sound as “energetic with a dark but hopeful feeling.” Having never shied away from themes of personal struggle and tumultuous life events, this new single leans heavily on lyrics about loss, grief, and overcoming a sense of doom when looking outwards after a significant personal loss. Guitarist Anthony Allegretto aptly sums up “Dark” as being a song about “feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders and pushing through with a hopeful desperation.”
“Dark” was self-produced by the band at Rainy Day Recording Co, recorded and mixed by Matt Stinn, and mastered by Trevor Case (JON BATISTE, RITA ORA, ORGY)
Review
At just over the 3-minute mark, “Dark” enters with mellow yet emotional music.
The initial lyrics of “So we meet again, intrusive thoughts” implies that the speaker is intimately acquainted with these thoughts, and they have been a recurring presence in their life. The term “intrusive thoughts” refers to involuntary and frequently upsetting thoughts that often arise from anxiety and stress, indicating that the speaker is likely facing an ongoing struggle with their mental health.
The line, “Now you’re calling, come to the dark with me, I don’t wanna die, but I long to be free,” effectively illustrates the ongoing internal conflict that the speaker is experiencing. The song’s protagonist is torn between a desire for freedom from their thoughts and fearing the consequences. The invitation to “come to the dark with me” could represent the temptation to give in to their impulses, despite the potential risks.
The raw, introspective lyrics are relatable, as many of us experience dealing with intrusive thoughts and mental health challenges. The lyrics’ portrayal of conflicting emotions and inner turmoil adds an extra layer of depth, making them particularly resonant for those going through similar experiences.
Overall, “Dark” does a great job of tackling mental health challenges and internal struggles empathetically, with lyrics many of us share, showing we’re not alone in the hurdles we face.
