The Dust Collectors – Hanlon’s Razor (EP Review)

Band: The Dust Collectors
EP: Hanlon’s Razor
Release Date: April 21, 2023
Genre: Folk-Rock

Calgary, Alberta-based folk-rock band The Dust Collectors have unveiled their latest EP, Hanlon’s Razor, which comes hot on the heels of their previous EP, Filtered Gems.

The six-song release begins with the band’s single, “Waiting Game,” a groovy blues-infused beat and soulful, dynamic vocals that makes it hard to stay seated.

“Bullshit & Lies” leans more to the rock side, which is immediately apparent. The gritty and hard-hitting track features raw and honest lyrics, with the vocalist singing of spouting bullshit & lies in different situations. The repetitive chorus is particularly memorable and straightforward, “Bullshit and lies is all I wanna do.” I enjoyed hearing a more rock-oriented sound from the band.

“Black Fly” brings us back to the folky sound we’re used to with The Dust Collectors, with a driving beat and to-the-point vocals. From the opening lyrics, “Lord knows, I just couldn’t say, Should I go, Should I stay, Kinda feel like a black fly buzzin’ round the window,” I knew I was in for a treat. The band has a knack for creating catchy hooks; this track is no different.

Towards the end of the release, “Keeping Time” boasts a catchy chorus and steady instrumentation. Throughout the chorus, “It’s been hard to find the ways to breathe in without just counting days, I’ve been keeping time even if that’s not entirely true,” we’re treated to some shining vocal harmonies and a more upbeat sound, making it impossible not to tap your foot or sing along.

Overall, Hanlon’s Razor is a great follow-up release, which continues to show the listener all that The Dust Collectors have to offer, and you won’t be disappointed.
