Yukon-based band Major Funk has unveiled their second album, The In Between—a pandemic project from a team of Yukon creatives unearthing the perplexities of life in limbo. The collection of bilingual (English and French) pop-funk tunes comes two years after the band’s debut vinyl/digital album, Is That You?
The band returned to Yukon’s Green Needle Records to record their second album. Owner, Operator, Producer, and Engineer Jim Holland was key in researching tones and techniques to create the final sound for the record.
The six-song release is designed to get the listener up and moving, which is evident on most of the tracks, including “Reciprocity” and “Feel the Love.” Watch the video for “Reciprocity” here to hear for yourself.
Band co-founder Étienne Girard says,
“Music is one way that we find love in the spaces in between, and we make music that makes people want to move.”
“Right Here Right Now” was the first to catch my attention, with its groovy beat. This track reminds me of a classic dance floor track with not only R&B and soul elements but also a funky disco flair. The song’s infectious beat and catchy hooks are irresistible, and the vocals add an extra layer of energy and fun.
“Tangible” showcases another side of the band, a slowed-down and soulful experience. The track features smooth and passionate vocals, polished production, and a catchy melody, making it accessible to a wider audience. From the first lyrics, “You’re it, There’s no one and nobody, Don’t quit, I’m with you and you’re for me,” I knew this song was special.
Overall, this release has something for everyone; whether you like upbeat, slowed-down, or something in between, it’s there. The release also features a French track, “A l’infini.” The release does a wonderful job showcasing the band’s incredible talent and musical versatility.
