Diamonds Dye and Sundance Alumnus Release Soul-Stirring RnB Music Video for “Get It Right”
Toronto pop fusion band Diamonds Dye has joined forces with Sundance alumnus Maziyar Khatam and rising R&B artist Rose Shiku to deliver soul-stirring R&B ballad “GET IT RIGHT” with a stunning music video to match that captures the essence of love and demands nothing less than authenticity.
Featuring Rose Shiku’s powerful vocals, “GET IT RIGHT” is an emotional journey about the search for true love and the power of knowing what you want. The track challenges the negative stereotype that Toronto can have a toxic dating culture. It serves as a sonic expression of demanding the real thing from your significant other because it truly exists. It’s intense, liberating, wistful, powerful, and beautiful. “GET IT RIGHT” embodies all of those things and what better way to do so than through the lens of beautiful Toronto?
The music video, shot and directed by Maziyar Khatam, vividly captures the essence of the song as Rose makes her way to her rendezvous through the vibrant streets of Toronto and, more prominently, Kensington Market. Viewers will experience the butterflies of pre-date nerves and excitement and witness Rose’s powerful studio performance of the track at Melody First, accompanied by Diamonds Dye’s Dennis Bayazitov and Tim Abramovich on keys and drums, respectively. Studio musicians Michael Baranov on bass and Samim Shouly on guitar round out the band, creating that classic, soulful sound in a timeless R&B ballad.
“GET IT RIGHT’s” music video captures Toronto’s beauty and charm and showcases its rich cultural diversity. Toronto lovers will surely spot some iconic city locations, including Union Station and the Fairmont Royal Oak, the El Mocambo Theatre, ICE Condos, Supermarket, Film Cafe, and the vibrant pulse of Kensington Market itself.
The song’s instrumental origins were inspired by a medley of contemporary acoustic tracks that all share a powerful groove in projecting an aura of melancholy. The 3/4-time groove and string section was inspired by waltz-time R&B classics like the Weeknd’s “Earned It” and Christina Aguilera’s “Walk Away,” while Adele’s “Skyfall” provided the spy jazz twinge that gives the song its unique vibe.
“GET IT RIGHT” was without a doubt our most exciting project yet,” says songwriter and Diamonds Dye keys Dennis Bayazitov. “Collaborating with my good friend Maziyar Khatam on both my music and his films in the past has been an incredible opportunity, so to get to work with him on yet another project was a total pleasure. Maz is an exceptionally talented writer and director (not to mention a two-time Sundance alumnus!) so to have him on board immediately made it an extra-stacked crew.”
“But it was Rose’s sheer talent and professionalism that made this project possible even before any shooting took place,” Bayazitov continues. “On her first visit to Gabe’s studio Melody First, Rose brought concrete musical ideas and was eager to record immediately. From that point on, the creative process was effortless. She’s the ideal artist a producer can hope to work with, as she turned our acoustic R&B arrangement into a soulful masterpiece.”
“The song is very vulnerable and I feel I did make it my own,” Shiku shares. “The experience and the words feel familiar, and so in making it my own I felt I added the style in which it was delivered. I was also able to further bring in harmonies and make it sound the way that I envisioned it.”
“I do think that the project is different from anything I’ve done,” Shiku continues. “I don’t particularly write soul music, and I do feel the song has this vintage sound to it. I’m more into contemporary R&B, and so just the fact that it wasn’t a beat I sang over, but a whole band instrumental, made it a much richer experience. I loved the delivery from Diamonds Dye.”
“I think, for me, the song is an expression of old meets new,” adds Diamonds Dye drums Timothy Abramovich, who also originally recorded the guitar part for the track. “It follows a typical chord progression, but we tried to add a modern spin with contemporary lyrics and really showcase the beauty of 21st century Toronto. I really enjoyed this song from a creative perspective. I chose a guitar part that was minimalist but highlighted the mood of the song. The music video was so much fun to film as well!”
“Working with Dennis and Gabe was a very freeing collaboration,” says Maziyar Khatam. “The process would typically begin with Dennis and Gabe presenting their concept for the music video, and then the three of us would sit down and discuss our visual references and ideas. We would create a mood board of images to guide the creative direction of the video. Dennis and I have been working together since 2017 on my film projects, and through this collaboration, we developed our own unique style.”
“This project was meaningful to me because I wanted to showcase Toronto, specifically Kensington Market,” Khatam continues. “It has such a vibrant aesthetic and rich culture. My shooting style has always been documentary-style, mainly due to budget limitations. I find this approach very liberating as it allows for unexpected elements to seep in.”
“This music video differs from my other videos in that it has a more wholesome and whimsical vibe to it, which are elements I don’t usually incorporate in my work. What’s interesting about this video is that it has familiar elements, but with a unique Torontonian twist.”
“Working with Dennis, Rose, and Maziyar on was an incredible experience,” says Gabriel Deich. “Their talent and creativity are unparalleled, and I’m proud that Melody First was able to provide the ideal setting for their vision to come to life. It was a pleasure to work with such talented individuals, and Melody First looks forward to continuing to support Toronto’s thriving music scene.”
