Montreal’s Debate Club is back with a new single, “Passage,” three years after releasing their debut LP, Phosphorescent.

The single serves as the introduction to their upcoming triptych of EPs, the first of which, entitled Égarements Vol. 1, will be available on March 3rd, 2023.

Flirting with shoegaze and dream-pop, this song is the introduction, the foundation of a new direction, more introspective and assumed, taken by the group in this trilogy of upcoming EPs.

“Passage is a path that cannot be circumvented, a confusion that resonates through our lives, a deafening noise that freezes us in time.”

Listen to “Passage” below and learn more about Debate Club via our Five Questions With segment.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Nice to meet you. We are Debate Club, a band from Montreal that has been quietly around for a few years. We’re old friends; some of us met in high school, others at University. This project is one where we can explore different creative paths, but it also serves as an excuse to get together and catch up on our lives, which isn’t always that simple as we get older. Oh yeah, the music. I guess we are a bit of shoegaze with a bit of indie rock.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

“Passage” is the first excerpt of a triptych of 3 mini-albums we’ve created over the last two years. Everything slowed down, and so did our sound. It touches on debilitating anxiety and the overwhelming thoughts one can feel at different times. It also is an introduction to a different sound, one where we decided to concentrate on layers and textures to create a vibe rather than raw energy.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

There are no guidelines or recipes for that. We simply try to build on a meaningful idea, whether it be a situation we’ve been through, something a friend shared, a few words we heard that resonated, or just a melody one of us came up with. The important thing is that everybody brings something into the process to get that idea to shine.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

Super stoked about playing Montreal’s Taverne Tour on February 9th. We’ll be opening for blesse who’ll be releasing a new album in March. We played Sled Island in Calgary last year, and that was a blast. Hopefully, we get to be a part of the fest again this year. We have a few more things coming up, but we’ll have to catch up later to get the details.

What’s your goal for 2023?

We haven’t released new music since 2019, so we are really excited to jump into it. Our plan is simple, we intend to play as much as possible and have as much fun as possible.
