Steve Benoit – “Que sera, sera” (Single Review)

Steve Benoit

New single, “Que Sera, Sera,” released by Steve Benoit

During his time as a touring musician in bands and Broadway productions like Cash, Ring of Fire, and Million Dollar Quartet, Steve Benoit saw the good and bad in society. This led him to write one of his most poignant songs, “Que Sera, Sera,” which translates to “Whatever is, Will Be,” a bluesy rock n’ roll response to the goings on in the world.

The single is from Steve Benoit’s upcoming Whatever Happened to the Drive-Ins album, a nostalgic look back on Steve’s childhood. It’s also a deeply personal album, touching on his relationship with his father and dreams, but it also contains songs about cars, small towns, and of course, drive-in movie theatres.

Review

Coming in at just over 4 minutes, “Que Sera, Sera” starts with a lively drum beat that immediately had my body swaying in my seat, which is quickly joined by rock n’ roll slide guitar and rhythmic bass.

Steve’s vocals have a melodic, almost sing-song quality at some points, whereas at other times possess a somewhat brisk tone.

The lyrics, “Eighteen, old enough to think and even walk into a bar and buy yourself a drink, You’re sick and tired of doing what you’re told, Don’t want to die young, Don’t want to get old,” paint a vivid picture of the youth today, and the thoughts that reside in their mind.

Steve shares, “Our society is a mess, and it’s up to us to make do with it. It’s up to us to find happiness within the sorrows of the world.”

So I leave you with, “Que Sera, Sera, What will be.”
