The Dust Collectors share their debut single, “Take A Dive”

Calgary, AB-based folk-rock band The Dust Collectors, have unveiled their debut single, “Take A Dive,” via Neon Moon Records.

A song made for boot stomping and beer-spilling cheers’, “Take A Dive” leans heavily into sea shanty roots. The Dust Collectors songwriter Luke Giblin drew inspiration from various stories of 1920s Irish immigrants in America – who made a living prize-fighting and sometimes fixing boxing fights through the Mob. As clever in its storytelling as it is musically catchy, The Dust Collectors sing in their signature four-part harmonies through the song’s refrain: “Take a dive, take a dive, swallow all your stupid pride, now is not the time to be a better man /Hit the canvas like a stone and you might make it out alive, you don’t mess around with crooked bookie men.”

The single was self-produced and recorded with Pat Palardy at Public Lunch Studios in Calgary, Alberta, and is to be followed up with a seven-track EP later this year.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

We’re The Dust Collectors, a four-piece alt-folk band from Calgary, AB. We put the band together in 2018 after years of playing separately in different groups. We have one pretty unique feature: all four members sing, and 4-part harmonies have become a key feature of our music. For that reason, we get compared to artists like The Band and Fleet Foxes. We just released our debut single Take A Dive, and have plans for an EP release early next year and a full album later in 2023.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

Take A Dive is a song we wrote after watching one-too-many gangster movies. It’s about a prizefighter who finds himself in a crisis of conscience. It’s set in New York about 100 years ago, and we wanted the recording to reflect the setting; piano, violin, and hand claps instead of guitar solos and crashing drums. It’s a fun, upbeat song and has become a favourite with live audiences.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Matt and Luke are our main lyricists, and both tend to take a story-telling approach to writing. We typically pull inspiration from books and movies, and even just want to create something in the style of an artist that we admire. It’s fun creating alter-egos and telling their stories, but also adding some personal touches in there too. Our one rule when writing for the band is that it has to come from an authentic place and written with integrity.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

We had our single release show on November 12th at the Ship & Anchor in Calgary! We are regulars on the Calgary live circuit and update our social media accounts with weekly live show announcements. Outside of town, we’re playing Nine In A Line Brewery in Vulcan on Dec 17th. In 2023, we’ve got our EP release show at the Palomino in Calgary on Feb 4th.

What’s your goal for the remainder of 2022 and into 2023?

We’re hoping that the next few months will see us recognized on a larger geographical scale. We’re focusing on releasing our single and the upcoming EP, hopefully allowing more people to access our music. Our goal is honestly just to have as many genuine listeners as possible. We’re all about positive vibes and sharing our work with people who can relate to and enjoy listening!
