Cynthia Hamar unveils music video for “Where Your Love Lives”
Alberta-born Métis singer-songwriter Cynthia Hamar has recently returned to the spotlight with her fourth album, Joint & Marrow (released September 23, 2022, via Neon Moon Records). Trailing the successful album release, Hamar now shares a nostalgic music video for the highlight track “Where Your Love Lives.”
The Nick Cave musically inspired track lyrically and sonically draws bittersweet feelings of years gone by, only augmented by the music video’s film collage of VHS home videos. The video was directed by Korban Hamar and edited by Jessica Lowe, using personal footage of Hamar and her family in years past. Hamar shares her thoughts behind the track and its creation process:
“This song took me a bit to write. I originally just started playing around with the idea of what it felt like finding your way home; what home even is. I recently had a bit of a breakdown when my niece sent me some old photos of my kids (they are 22, 21 and 20 now) and I instantly had this yearning for a home that was long ago. I still have a home, it just looks different now and empty nesting is pretty sweet. Empty nesting is a bit of a rediscovering of home as well. So….I made it into a love song for my husband; “Home is where your love lives”. This can mean so many things and doesn’t just apply to an intimate relationship. I think this concept is what stirred up the nostalgic longings for home, our love lived there, in those moments of time and that’s what made it home.”
The track “Where Your Love Lives” was recorded and performed by Hamar and Chris Andrew. The track features the sonic outcomes of a prepared piano technique (paper is placed in the strings of the piano body) and uses the body of the piano for unique percussive sounds throughout.
