Rogers Place, Edmonton, AB

It’s been five years since Simple Plan has entertained crowds in Edmonton, and fans at Rogers Place were ravenous for that wait to be over!

Marking their 10th appearance in the City of Champions, the Montreal-based group pumped out a 14-song set laden with that early 2000’s pop-punk energy. Despite having been at it for almost 24 years now, these guys haven’t slowed down.

Vocalist Pierre Bouvier patrolled back and forth across the stage, interacting with the crowd; it was obvious the band was happy to be here. Guitarists Jeff Stinco and Sébastien Lefebvre also looked totally into it, using the stage risers, and making faces to the crowd as they started their set off with one of their most well-known tracks, “I’d Do Anything”.

With such a strong start, they set the pace for the rest of the set, which included a medley of covers (All-Star/Sk8er Boi/Mr. Brightside), “What’s new Scooby Doo,” and scattered selections from their other albums.

They did play all 4 of their most recognizable singles from the debut album “No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls” – “I’d Do Anything” as mentioned above, “Addicted,” and closing the set with “I’m Just A Kid” and “Perfect.”

Drummer Chuck Comeau came out from behind the kit during “I’m Just a Kid,” and crowd surfed through the last part of the song while Pierre Bouvier took over his throne and threw down the drum lines with ease.

While my preferred genres are typically much heavier, these guys were undeniably an absolute ton of fun, and I kind of wish I’d have seen them live much sooner. Let’s hope I get that chance again!
