Zach’s Picks of the Week is back for Zach’s Birthday Edition
Another Music Monday is upon us, so it’s time to introduce you to five new incredible artists and their best or latest songs! Zach’s Picks Of The Week is here once again on Canadian Beats. I will recommend my top five favourites from this week’s posts or articles. You will get a little taste of each when you watch this week’s video below. Please visit each of the articles that are featured in this post through their links. However, it’s time to get things started, so let’s get into Zach’s Picks Of The Week right now. Oh, and these are my Birthday Picks of the Week!!
Five
Starting things off this week will be Toronto-based artists Dany Horovitz and Jonathan Panetta. They teamed up on the new single, “Make Use Of Your Time .” While Dany is best known for a more acoustic folk sound, Jonathan takes the garage and punk rock approach to his music. However, the fusion of their two styles brought together this incredible collaboration, which you can find on all streaming platforms now. The primary influence behind this song was a game called Life Is Strange, where a character can rewind time and fix occurrences in the past, only to realize that people spend a lot of time being stuck in the past, hoping they could’ve done things differently. This is evident in this new single, so listen to it yourself here.
Four
Moving on in this week’s list will take us to our nation’s capital, where we will meet Ottawa-based artist Laurence DaNova. Laurence has unveiled his latest single, “The Island,” inspired by the war on Gaza in 2021. In his brand-new single, Laurence has created this sonic place of refuge from the chaos in our world. Heavily influenced by the pop music of the 80s and 90s and reminds us we are all human. I want the same thing at the end of the day. Look for yourself right here.
Three
Making our way into this week’s top three will be a Montreal-based singer/songwriter named Matt Holubowski. He is giving us a glimpse of his forthcoming new album, Like Flowers on a Milten Lawn, with his latest single, “End Scene.” This single is available on all streaming platforms, but that new album will be coming out on March 24 of next year via Audiogram. “End Scene,” tells a story from beginning to end. The single is divided into three distinct movements. The first highlights how fast a lifetime of work can be, and the next depicts the ease with which everything can vanish. Then finally facilitating the transition from chaos to serenity. Listen and check out the brand new video for “End Scene” here.
Two
The top two spot is reserved for Elmvale, Ontario-based singer-songwriter, Graham Scott Fleming. He just recently got signed to Open Road Recordings and RGK Entertainment. After that, he released his next single, “Somedays,” to all streaming platforms. That will follow his previous release, “Life Of The Party,” which came out in July. On November 25th, Graham will be performing as a part of CMAOntario’s Songs and Stories event in Haliburton, Ontario. Plus, there is much more to learn about Mr. Fleming when you head over to our Five Questions With segment here.
One
For my final choice in Zach’s Picks Of The Week, I bring you a phenomenal résumé for one. Having written a number one billboard hit, being one of MuchMusic’s original veejays and an author and podcaster. Juno-winning songwriter Christopher Ward recorded a solo debut album in 1978 titled Spark of Desire. It was not available to be heard on streaming services for the longest time. But on a lucky trip to his well-organized storage space during the pandemic, Ward found the master tapes to the record. Thankfully, Warner Music Canada was able to bake them back into existence and remaster this incredible debut. With this new re-release, fans will experience the delightful album Spark of Desire. Check it out here.
