Christopher Mihas Expands Moves After Midnight Catalog With ‘80s-Groove “I See Right Through You”

Catchy choruses and funky guitar walks are all too familiar to Waterloo, ON DJ/Producer Christopher Mihas, better known as Moves After Midnight. Christopher’s tenacity for electro-funk is captured in his newest single, “I See Right Through You.”

Synth-pop is a form of artistic expression that seems to impact each new generation of music appreciators while leaving a groovy stain on producers who grew up with and work within the genre. Inspired heavily by the music of his youth, Christopher pays homage to 80’s pop-funk music with this electro-funk dance track.

“I See Right Through You” is Christopher’s most recent release under the moniker Moves After Midnight, following a string of releases, including October 2021 debut EP Fluorescent Memoirs and, more recently, a smash single “Vanity Prayers” in September 2022.

Straying from the norm for the group, Christopher looked to revisit the glory days of 1980’s electronic funk bangers. “I See Right Through You”  features sultry vocals accompanied by bone-chilling harmonies that tell the tale of supporting and guiding self-destructive loved ones. Funky guitar riffs paired with walking bass lines usher in an infectious chorus that is sure to live in your head rent-free for the next six months.

The overall product comes out to be an absolutely smashing electro-funk single.

Moves After Midnight has seen a string of features from a plethora of talented musicians. Despite this, Christopher has found himself drawn to a select few features.

Bartek Milczarczyk holds the title of Moves After Midnight’s “secret weapon.” A talented guitarist in his own right, Bartek provides instrumentation for “I See Right Through You” while co-writing alongside Christopher. Using Bartek’s solo as the foundation to build, Christopher recruited Emmellienne to provide the charmingly mystic vocalizations that tie the track together.

Award-winning London-based sound engineer Sefi Carmel was brought on board to add the finishing touches to Moves After Midnight’s newest brainchild, providing a master class in mixing and mastering.

The final product is an 80’s synth dreamscape that captures the essence of electro-funk in a charming and infectious manner. In addition, there is plenty of cowbell to go around – so get grooving like it’s 1985.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Christopher Mihas, and I was born and raised in Waterloo, Ontario. I’ve been DJ’ing for 27 years, and I’m the owner/operator of CM Entertainment – a Dj Company in Waterloo. Music has been an important part of my life, and some of my earliest life memories include music. I enjoy the process of creating music. I find it relaxing and also a great escape. I’ve been writing songs since I was a teenager, and I continue to produce music to this day. I’m also a drummer/ percussionist, and I usually play the Congas/Bongos at the events I DJ.

Tell us about the process of writing “I See Right Through You.”

My initial vision for this song was an electronic/dance/bluesy instrumental. I constructed a dance beat with a bass line, and I got my good friend and musical companion, Bartek Milczarczyk, to play guitar over the beat. I then went back and changed the bass line and ultimately reconstructed the beat, and now I had a Funky 80s-sounding track. I instantly started to write lyrics (which didn’t take long to write), and now I had a complete song – I just needed a singer. I wanted a soulful female vocalist, and I found her on a website called, Soundbetter. Her name is Emmellienne, and Soundbetter is a networking site for musicians. Fantastic site for musicians and producers – you can hire vocalists, musicians, sound engineers, etc.

What’s it like being a musician in Waterloo?

We have quite a few venues to catch live entertainment, but I’m not a touring musician, and I don’t play any gigs (as a musician). I work and record with various musicians that live in different areas of the world. Therefore, in order to play my songs live, I would need to hire local musicians to play with me. I think it would be a cool experience to hear my songs played live, and perhaps one day, it’ll materialize, but I don’t see that happening in the near future.

Who was the first Canadian artist to blow you away?

When I was a kid, I use to listen to my older brother’s records, and that’s how I discovered bands like KISS, AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Van Halen. Amongst all those records, he had The Guess Who’s Greatest Hits, and I remember playing the song “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature” over and over again. The Guess Who probably blew me away first. Also, when I first saw RUSH in concert, they blew me away on a whole other level.

You’ve been making music for while now. What’s one piece of advice you can offer to those starting out?

I think it’s important to listen to various styles of music. As a DJ, it’s crucial to have an extensive knowledge base in various genres of music, but even as a musician, it plays an important role. You might be a hip-hop producer, but you can find inspiration for a song by listening to classic rock. An idea or melody might grab a hold of you from a song that’s entirely different than the style of music you’re composing. You’re tapping into your creativity with a more cultured understanding. I think that’s extremely beneficial to any musician.
