Montreal, QC-based singer-songwriter and producer Ken Presse is no stranger to the music scene, as he joined The Franklin Electric in 2015 as a guitarist and toured more than 18 countries with them. He also co-founded the band Delta Creek in 2018. Now, he’s made the jump to a solo career, and he’s on fire with his debut album, In My Mind, out November 11, 2022.
Ken unveiled five singles in advance of the release, two in 2021 and three this year, “I Lost You,” “Hold on Tighter,” This Ain’t the Night.”
“Sometimes” has a cheery, upbeat intro that immediately pulls you in. As the song started, I was entranced by Ken’s captivating vocals, and my feet were tapping away. The lyrics of the chorus, “Sometimes I love too much, Sometimes I love too little to say, I would’ve changed if I could, Sometimes I think I would of stayed, The same, Given the circumstances Taking too many chances, Sometimes I think I could’ve changed, But I stayed the same,” played over and over in my head after multiple listens, and I was absolutely fine with that. The vocals on the track are just catchy enough that I would absolutely love to hear this song done acappella, and I’m confident that with Ken’s shining vocals, it would be a huge success!
“The Thing About You” was released as a single in 2021 and amassed over 55K streams on Spotify. This is my absolute favourite on the release. I love storytelling in a song, and this track encompasses that. From the first lyrics, “It used to take three drinks to get over someone, To cut ’em loose and let them go, This time I’m six drinks in and hell I ain’t even close, Before I let you in, a broken heart, was something, I had never known,” right until the end, “And that’s the thing about you, The way it felt so right as I was pulling you closer in the middle of the night, When having everything was a dream that I used to wake up to, No matter what I do, It won’t ever mean what you meant to me,” I was 100% hooked. I love this track because it could easily appeal to fans of many genres, including rock, pop, folk, and country, and it could also easily resonate with many listeners.
Through the ten-track release, I enjoyed each and every song, and as it was my first listen to Ken Presse, it has left me wanting much more music from him.
