Lily Monaghan – “On Hold” (Single Review)

Lily Monaghan

Lily Monaghan unveils her single, “On Hold”

Following up on her rapturously received debut single “Sleeping Alone,” Edmonton-based singer-songwriter Lily Monaghan is back with “On Hold,” an equally riveting preview of her first EP, Introspection, due out in early 2023. Like its predecessor, “On Hold” is a showcase for Lily’s stunning voice and her unflinching skills at conveying lyrical heartbreak.

Lily says of the song,

“‘On Hold’ was written during a time when I felt as if I was being placed on the back burner and being used as a backup plan in case something better would come along. The song is sort of like a conversation with myself, recalling the ways I was misused and the ways I mistrusted. All in all the is is a song about acceptance: accepting the fact that I can’t change every situation, accepting that I can’t force somebody to choose me, and accepting that I need to let go and move forward.”

Review

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I love listening to an artist for the first time. Not knowing what to expect is part of the fun. This was the case with Lily Monaghan, and I was not disappointed.

“On Hold” begins with a warm, inviting beat, which is joined by Lily’s bright and harmonious vocals. Through the first part of the song, the vibe lingers on the mellow side, but as we pass the midway point, the whole atmosphere changes, and Lily’s vocals take on an impressively powerful tone.

As she belts out, “It’s funny cause I thought I knew you, So tragically cast as the fool, But I’ll play this part like I showcase my scars, As if I’m proud that I need to,” you can feel the emotion behind the lyrics, and it’s enough to bring goosebumps to my arms.

Lily has it all, and she’s not afraid to showcase her various vocal abilities, which is always a plus in my books!
