Mallory Johnson releases her debut album, Surprise Party

East Coast-raised, Nashville-based country artist Mallory Johnson is celebrating a milestone with the release of her debut album, Suprise Party.

Initially starting out as a six-track EP, the addition of the title track caught Mallory by surprise, inspiring an entire concept album,

“One evening I got together with Carli and Julie Kennedy and we started writing “Surprise Party.” Something clicked after we finished writing this song and the theme of the entire record just organically fell into place. “Surprise Party” wrapped the project in a beautiful bow and what was initially an EP, turned into a full-length concept album —something I’ve always dreamed of doing. The songs started to perfectly weave together to tell a celebratory story sprinkled with champagne, confetti, and birthday cake.

Produced by Grammy and Oscar award-nominated producer Kent Wells (Dolly Parton, Paul Anka, Carly Pearce), Mallory collaborated with both close friends and industry heavy hitters to co-write the album, including Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Patricia Conroy, Tenille Arts, Carli & Julie Kennedy (Twin Kennedy), Jason Blaine, and Kelly Prescott to name a few. Taking her time to craft her sound and songwriting, the album features Mallory’s most authentic music yet, “I feel like I’ve fine-tuned what I want to say and how I want to say it.

The album features previous singles, “Married,” “Not Your Heart,” “Wise Woman,” “Goin’ Broke,” and “Drunk Mind, Sober Heart.”

The title track, “Suprise Party,” does a great job of showcasing Mallory’s talent. From the beginning of the track, the listener is pulled in by Mallory’s sweet, inviting vocals and beautiful tune.

The lyrics, “I hope you see the Northern Lights shining in the dark, And you’ve got a friend to help you mend a broken heart, And if you let somebody go, I hope you do it carefully, And I hope somebody throws you a surprise party,” and “I hope that when you say I Love You somebody says it back, And when you’re searching for forgiveness you’re brave enough to ask, And when it’s your time to go I hope it’s hard to find a seat, And I hope somebody throws you a surprise party,” pulls at the heartstrings, and will resonate with many listeners.

I’m normally pulled toward the upbeat tracks on an album unless there’s a slow track that showcases storytelling, and this is just that type of song. Mallory does an amazing job on every aspect of this track, leaving me wanting more.
