To celebrate the release of their 2021 album, In the Court of the Dragon, Trivium has embarked on a massive North American tour. The aptly titled the Deadmen and Dragons tour spans nearly 30 cities with support from Between the Buried and Me, White Chapel, and Khemmis. I was fortunate enough to catch them at the Toronto stop. This tour packs a punch with an incredibly diverse lineup that will appeal to metal fans from all walks of life.

Opening the show was Khemmis from Colorado. Khemmis blends the heavy, gritty feeling of doom metal while having melodic and anthemic moments akin to Iron Maiden. Soaring vocals, big choruses, and a healthy dose of guitar shred are the name of the game. Khemmis draws from classic heavy metal without feeling like a throwback or nostalgia band.

Nearly stealing the show was Whitechapel. This deathcore outfit has been going strong since their 2007 album, the Somatic Defilement. Having left their deathcore routes, Whitechapel has adopted a more progressive sound. Lead vocalist Phil Bozeman oozes with charisma and stage presence. As he switches back and forth between deep growls and sombre cleans, his performance is a sight to behold. Their set perfectly blends quiet, ambient moments, brutal chugs, and hooky choruses.

Between the Buried and Me are absolute giants in the world of progressive metal. Segments of insane, mathy-death metal are juxtaposed with keyboards, synths, quirky, clean vocals, and a remarkable sense of catchiness. Despite having seen them play numerous times, I am always reminded of how much of juggernaut they are. Just when I think the intensity has peaked, the band breaks down into a section that hooks your ears and blows your mind. Their technicality is only matched by their performance and knack for memorable moments. Even after 22 years of existence, BTBAM is still one of the best live bands I have ever witnessed.

Last but surely not least, Trivium stormed the stage with a furious and unrelenting stage presence. Playing songs both new and old, Trivium reminded the audience why they are headliners. Simply put, they are the perfect live metal band. Their set list has choruses, tight guitar solos, crowd interactivity, and world-class stage banter from lead vocalist/guitar player Matt Heafy.

During one of their choruses, Matt Heafy stops the band as he witnesses a fight break out. He took this opportunity to break up the confrontation and calm the situation using nothing but kind words. In this rare moment, such class was exercised and appreciated. The crowd went wild during every song. There was never a moment of tedium or boredom. Every song had its place, and the selection of tunes was exactly what you’d want to hear. I couldn’t recommend this tour enough. In a year of jaw-dropping shows, this one might be my favourite.
