Mike Legere Shares Compelling New Single/Video, “With You”
Nova Scotia-born/Toronto-based musician Mike Legere has released an emotion-laden, contemplative new single, “With You,” alongside a new music video.
When asked about the inspiration behind the song, Legere said,
“‘With You’ is about choosing the painful process of de-coupling, the self-reflection and re-surfacing issues you are forced to face when removing yourself from a long-term relationship. It’s about taking stock of your life and who you are vs. who you had set out to be, re-centering yourself in your own priorities and squaring all the little decisions that led you to where you are, in hopes of growing beyond that place. It was written from within a cloud of grief and uncertainty in the months preceding the end of a ten year relationship.”
“With you” is a journey through all of the emotions felt at the end of a relationship. The separation of self from someone you have been intrinsically tied to for a long time conjures feelings of being out of focus, fragmented and melancholic. Reflecting on what could have gone differently and yet, at the same time, feeling hopeful through that sorrow as you look towards the future.
Legere’s music video does a nice job of visually encapsulating this range of emotions as he and his band are presented as ghostly and transparent in a variety of scenic locations. The listener/viewer’s focus is squarely on the feeling Legere’s journey evokes, mirrored in the gradual sonic intensity that builds throughout.
Review
Being a fan of all of Mike’s previous releases, I knew this one would be no different, and I was right.
“With You” starts with a beautifully laid-out intro, joined by Mike’s easy-going yet emotion-filled vocals.
Through the song, Mike sings of a past relationship, which came to an end, and trying to move forward. The music goes from mellow to a somewhat eerie intensity.
The lyrics, “Cause things are different now, And all this space is pulling us apart, Trying to find a way to get it back, And unbreak this heart, But we will all know how old habits go, We all know how old patterns go,” evoke strong emotion, and allows the listener to put themselves in Mike’s shoes, and easily relate to the single.
The track’s final minute features an intense instrumental solo, sure to give you chills!
