Upkvst

Upkvst

Your past doesn’t determine your future, you do – that’s the message of New Brunswick artist Upkvst’s newly-released single, “Midnight Club.”

Over a murky boom-bap beat that leaps the listener into a nighttime vibe, Upkvst delivers meaningful bars explaining the diamond in the rough mentality, shining in the dark, and pushing forward to forge a brighter future.

Upkvst shares,

“I wanted to give a sense of confidence through this song, like you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. The demons I used to have are no longer burdens. I needed to face them to feel free.”

Leslie Woods Meyers

Leslie Woods

Campbellton, New Brunswick-based singer-songwriter Leslie Woods Meyers has shared her single, “Old Bones,” from her upcoming debut album.

Leslie shares,

“We had just lost our 12 yr old Golden Retriever, and the sadness in that was overwhelming.  We were a family grieving. But it was in the week following that I realized the impact of the loss on my mom, 87, and with dementia. They had a pretty unique bond in that they shared what no one else could – an understanding for one another on their parallel roads in aging.  He had become her guardian, taking extra care when around her as tho he somehow instinctively knew that he needed to. He would lead her up the stairs at bedtime when she would stay overnight with us, sleep outside of her bedroom door the entire night, lead her down the hallway in the morning – he wouldn’t leave her side.  And I realized just how much his presence in her life had helped her in her feeling of isolation and loneliness in her aging and illness. Old Bones was inspired by that friendship, by our love for him, and in my search for resolve in the loss of him, but also of my mom – piece by piece, in her dementia, and acceptance of both.”

“We were having lunch on a terrace during the long weekend of May, and it felt so good to have a long weekend.”

Ben Buchanan

Ben Buchanan

Moncton, NB-based artist Ben Buchanan unveiled his single, “Passenger,” back in July.

On this track, Ben wanted to explore what loneliness and sorrow sounded like after feeling like the only person in the universe in the early hours of the morning driving on the highway in New Brunswick, with no one else in either direction. The title comes from conjuring up an imaginary passenger to curb the loneliness, and the song explores minor and major home key centers to represent loneliness and joy, respectively.

Maude Cyr-Deschênes

Maude Cyr-Deschênes

Edmundston, New Brunswick-based singer-songwriter Maude Cyr-Deschênes has unveiled her EP, Nos Saisons.

Cyr-Deschênes’ lyrics and melodies carry a folk sincerity. The EP combines acoustic, electric, and country guitars, which intermingle with the lightness of her jazz piano. The EP was inspired by artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, Beau Dommage, and Harmonium. The opus is carried by choral vocals that subtly envelop us in the sense of comfort.
