Goodnight Sunrise

Goodnight Sunrise share their brand new album, Against All Odds

Toronto’s relentless rock duo Goodnight Sunrise have unveiled their album, Against All Odds.

Against All Odds, the third full-length from the band, is their biggest, boldest, and most commanding record yet. Produced and mixed by Brian Moncarz (Our Lady Peace, The Trews, Circa Survive, Moneen), mastered by Grammy-winner Brian Lucey (Green Day, Arctic Monkeys, Elvis Costello, Ghost), and featuring bassist Duncan Coutts and drummer Jason Pierce of Our Lady Peace, the album achieves one of the band’s most longstanding goals: to capture on record the feeling of being at one of their live shows.

Against All Odds is defined by hooky choruses, arena-sized drums, heavy guitars, ripping solos, soaring harmonies, and gang vocals. Inspired sonically by Foo Fighters, The Pretty Reckless, and Jimmy Eat World, Vakharia & Kochberg describe the album as “a salute to the rock music that inspired us, both musically and also as a voice for the misfits of the world that push back against the status quo.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi! We’re Vanessa Vakharia (lead vocals, keytar) and David Kochberg (lead vocals, guitar) from Goodnight Sunrise, a rock band from Toronto. The 2 of us started the band over ten years ago, and we perform live as a 5-piece with a drummer, bassist, and 2nd guitarist. We’ve played over 300 shows across North America and Europe, and 2022 has been an invigorating new chapter in our story that we are stoked to keep building on with our literally years-in-the-making new album.

Tell us a bit about your upcoming release.

We recorded our 3rd full-length album, Against All Odds, over the course of the pandemic, and honestly, it’s the best thing we’ve ever done. We’ve come a long way in songwriting, production, and musicianship over the years and are very proud to see the hard work pay off. We also have to thank our producer/mixer Brian Moncarz who helped us achieve our long-standing goal of capturing the energy of our live shows on a record – he also pulled the magic trick of convincing Duncan Coutts (bass) and Jason Pierce (drums) of Our Lady Peace to play on our album! They set a powerful foundation for us to build on, and the creative work really sustained us through all the lockdowns and lack of shows.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

It comes from everything. It can be existential questions we’ve grappled with our whole lives. It can be something that happened in the news that morning. Any feeling can be channeled into a song. And that’s perhaps what we’ve always loved about songwriting, the outlet it provides to process difficult feelings. Putting them into words and then putting those words into melody on top of sounds is a way for us to make some sort of emotional and philosophical sense of all the chaos. The album title Against All Odds is our mantra that no matter how tough life gets, we’ll persist and push through to the other side.

Do you have any upcoming shows or festivals you’d like to tell us about – tell us what your favourite past festival was this summer and what you are looking forward to in the fall?

An absolute highlight of this year was playing Tallinn Music Week in Estonia back in May. It was our first adventure in a post-lockdown world, and the festival was incredible and rejuvenating. An especially profound memory was performing outdoors in Narva, a small town on the Eastern border of the country, which looks directly across the river at Russia. At a time of extreme tension and conflict nearby, it was pretty humbling as a Canadian band to bring our own hopeful and inclusive music to such a place – as a further sign of solidarity with Ukraine and the rest of the region, we also played Neil Young’s “Keep On Rockin in the Free World” while looking across the border.

What’s your goal for 2022/2023?

Onward and upward – we’re just getting restarted! We will be touring to celebrate the album through the fall and have some surprises planned for the following months – stay tuned on our socials and at goodnightsunrise.com for all updates!
