ALIAS – Five Questions With

ALIAS unveils the new album, Jozef

Montreal’s multi-instrumentalist, composer, and polymath Emmanuel Alias – releases his exciting debut psych-rock album Jozef under ALIAS, via Simone Records.

Featuring entrancing sounds and visuals from this year’s energetic singles “Together,” “Fantasy,” and “Shine,” this new record continues to shape and showcase ALIAS’ genre-bending grit while exploring new complex and ominous themes.

On these new concepts, ALIAS explains,

“My new project takes for starting point an imaginary character, Jozef, an eclectic oddball whose madness pervades every song of the album. His thoughts are sometimes troubling but often touching, showcasing the uncanniness of his world. But the reasons behind his condition are never specified. Is he mad or simply dreaming? Are the people he meets real or only voices inside his head? Each song act as a new chapter in Jozef’s story, following a non-linear narrative. It is up to the listeners to put the pieces of the puzzle together”.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello, I’m Emmanuel ALIAS, lead singer of ALIAS. If you have something to know about me, is that I like waking up in the middle of the night to eat chips and candies.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

JOZEF is the new album from ALIAS. Short stories about a fictional psycho-killer (Yep, I really like horror movies….) The general vibe I’ve tried to find is an in-between with Electric Fuzzy sound and a smooth, kitsch, and vintage mood…. The real challenge for me was to create a sweet madness for this album.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

I really like to dig into horror movies. I’m not the kind of songwriter that uses his own memories to write lyrics. I’m too shy for this. So most of the time, I usually write about feelings that I have through fictional characters.

Do you have any upcoming shows or festivals you’d like to tell us about?

I’m so excited to perform at the MaMa Festival in Paris. October 13th at La Machine du Moulin Rouge, Youhou! And we’re gonna tour for a couple of dates in EU and Canada just after this one.
A special one is coming with M4MTL Festival, in Montreal on November 17th, with special guests (Les DeuxLuxues, Beyries, etc.)

What’s your goal for 2022?

I’m building my own recording studio right now in Montreal. That’s a huge project but really interesting. I have no skills in construction, but I learn every day.

My goal for the next year would be to play in the US and Ontario. We’ve never been there!
